Sportsgiving came early this year.
According to an Imgur/Reddit post by user gotsnowart, a high school girls’ basketball team in St. Joseph, Missouri received the surprise of a lifetime in the form of a very special delivery in the mail. The Benton Cardinals were already riding a high, having secured the Missouri state championship title for 2016, but a surprise package by NBA legend LeBron James lifted their spirits to new, soaring levels.

The Thanksgiving story you know probably goes a bit like this: English Pilgrims, seeking religious freedom, landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where they found a rich land full of animals and were greeted by a friendly Indian named Squanto, who taught them how to plant corn.
The true story is more complicated. Once you learn about the real Squanto — also known as Tisquantum — you’ll have a great yarn to tell your family over the Thanksgiving table.
I asked historian Charles Mann, the author of 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus, and Paula Peters, a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe and an expert on Wampanoag history, to tell me the real story.

Native Americans living in the Northeast, like Game of Thrones fans, knew one thing at this time of year: Winter is coming. As such, now was the time for one last glut of food before a four-month-at-least period of traveling along with migrating prey in order to hunt for fresh food. In that sense, yes, Native American harvest feasts are a clear primogenitor to today’s Thanksgiving.
But the truth is more complex. As Thanksgiving matured as a holiday in the Americas, many of the inhabitants in the United States — Native Americans, settlers and enslaved Africans — contributed elements of our modern Thanksgiving meal to the table.
If Thanksgiving is an American tradition, then its roots are as varied and widespread as America, as well. To put it simply: There are a lot of ingredients in this melting pot. To find out the roots of many of our favorite culinary traditions, Mic spoke with Michael Twitty, culinary historian and founder of the blog Afroculinaria.

Comet ISON is teasing the solar system as it dances with the sun and it’s giving astronomers mixed signals.Will it meet a fiery death – or survive – when it whips around the sun on Thursday?
The icy comet will be only about 1 million miles away from the sun’s super-hot surface during its close encounter on Thanksgiving. On Monday, it looked like it was about to die even before it got there. On Tuesday, it appeared healthy again.
“We have never seen a comet like this,” Naval Research Laboratory astrophysicist Karl Battams said during a NASA news conference Tuesday. “It has been behaving strangely.”
Because it is so close to the sun, ISON (EYE’-sahn) will likely not be visible from Earth on Thursday – except via a fleet of NASA telescopes and spacecraft aimed at the comet as it gets closest to the sun at 1:37 p.m. EST, he said. And it will be a few hours before scientists know whether the comet survives.
