The carnage at a college campus in northeastern Kenya ended Thursday night with “all four terrorists” dead and the body count rising to at least 147 people, authorities said.
The shocking rampage at Garissa University College came to a bloody conclusion at 9:30 p.m. local time (2:30 p.m. ET), Kenya officials said, more than 16 hours after the gunmen stormed the school, targeting Christians and taking hostages. The al Qaeda-linked extremist group al Shabab claimed responsibility for the siege.
Masked attackers “shot indiscriminately” and “heavy gunfire and explosions” were heard during the standoff, authorities and eyewitnesses said. The country’s Ministry of Interior said about 587 people were safely evacuated, while another 79 were injured. All students were accounted for, officials tweeted.

Two Palestinians stormed a Jerusalem synagogue, opening fire and using knives and axes to attack Jews praying inside, officials said Tuesday. Four rabbis were killed — including three dual U.S.-Israeli nationals — along with an Israeli policeman, and five other people wounded.
The attackers were later killed in a shootout with police. “Everybody was praying peacefully without any disruptions whatsoever and then all of a sudden the terrorists go into a place of worship and peace and turn it into a killing nightmare,” Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told BBC Radio 4.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “Human beasts committed a massacre, and they came charged with hatred against the Jewish people and their state.”

Suspected Islamist fighters killed at least 90 people in an early morning attack on a village in remote northeast Nigeria on Sunday, witnesses said.
The Boko Haram gunmen surrounded the village of Izge, near the border with Cameroon, spraying it with bullets, setting off explosions and burning down dozens of houses, they said.
“As I am talking to you now, all the dead bodies of the victims are still lying in the streets,” resident Abubakar Usman told Reuters by telephone. “We fled without burying them, fearing the terrorists were still lurking in the bushes.”

A harrowing account of one group of Algerian hostages’ desperate flight for freedom credited an unusual gadget for helping to save their lives.
Liviu Floria, a Romanian gas worker, fled the scene of the hostage crisis at the Tiguentourine plant last week, following two days of hiding from the terrorists on the plant grounds, The New York Times reports.
Floria said he and seven others climbed a fence and escaped into the desert, navigating for miles across unfamiliar terrain using only a distant light and the compass application on Floria.
