Karst is a landscape formed by the dissolution of soluble bedrocks (mainly carbonate rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum), featuring sinkholes, caves, and underground streams. Karst topography is relatively fragile and unstable in geographic terms, yet it creates fabulous and unique landscapes around the world. South of China is a typical region of karst topography, where Guilin’s hills and caves, Yunnan’s Stone Forest, and Guizhou’s Xiaoqikong are the best examples.
It is estimated that some hundred million years ago, the area where Guilin is located was a gulf. In the long years, the seabed was covered with thick calcareous sediments, which were slowly dissolving and shaped by the salty seawater at the same time. Thus the original appearance of Guilin’s hills and caves had been formed. Later came the movements of the earth crust, and the seabed rose, cracked, and gradually formed the landscape of Guilin. After millions of years, with erosions of the wind, rain, and rivers, the hills and caves developed into what we can see today, fantastic and unbelievable.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter early Sunday morning, elated: “So great to see our Country starting to open up again!”
He shared that sentiment with nearly 80 million followers and attached it to a tweet from one of his golf clubs, Trump National, in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. “Game on! We are thrilled to announce the reopening of @trumpgolfla beginning Saturday May 9th!,” the club tweeted. “We look forward to welcoming you back. Book your tee time now!”
Sometimes a tweet is just a tweet. And sometimes it’s an advertisement for your business. And sometimes, when the president of the United States promotes his business on Twitter while overseeing the federal response to a pandemic gutting the economy, it’s a financial conflict of interest.

A top aide to Vice President Pence has tested positive for the coronavirus, making her the second known person working at the White House to contract the illness in the past two days, according to several people familiar with the situation.
Katie Miller, the vice president’s press secretary, was notified Friday about the result, according to people familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it had not been publicly announced by the White House. Miller confirmed to NBC News that she tested positive and said she was asymptomatic. The White House earlier in the day confirmed that a member of Pence’s staff tested positive but did not disclose the individual’s name.
President Trump later appeared to confirm it was Miller.

Traces of the COVID-19 coronavirus have been found in the semen of some severely infected men, raising the possibility that the virus might be sexually transmitted, a new study from China claims.
Researchers found evidence of the virus in six men out of a group of 38 COVID-19 patients at Shangqiu Municipal Hospital in China who provided samples.
The six men included four who were still infected and two who were recovering, the researchers said.

The United States is facing a political and economic challenge like nothing it has seen in nearly 100 years.
Mass unemployment on a scale not seen since the Great Depression has erased the economic gains of the past decade and now threatens to linger for years, fueling social discord and shaking an already polarized political system.
Almost overnight, it seems, the U.S. economy, which just two months ago boasted abundant jobs and soaring stock values, has become a shambles. Not since the government began collecting official data in 1948 has a smaller share of the U.S. population been employed.

Karst is a topography formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. It is characterized by underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves. It has also been documented for more weathering-resistant rocks, such as quartzite, given the right conditions.

For Coloradans like Jessica Bart, running is part of their everyday routine.
“We want to do this for our health and our mental well-being,” she says.
When she heard about the case of Ahmaud Arbery, a black man who was shot and killed while jogging in his Georgia neighborhood, it hit a little close to home.

When the coronavirus pandemic first emerged, public health officials told the world to watch out for its telltale symptoms: fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath. But as the virus has spread across the globe, researchers have developed a more nuanced picture of how symptoms of infection can manifest themselves, especially in milder cases.
We’re getting a “better understanding of how these symptoms express in the general population and not necessarily in hospitalized patients,” which is whom most of the earlier studies from China looked at. “So it’s a bit of a bigger picture,” says Charitini Stavropoulou, an associate professor in health services research at City, University of London in the U.K., who led an analysis of known symptoms in milder cases as part of a collaboration with Oxford University.
Some of these symptoms, such as loss of smell or taste, are highly distinctive and a strong indicator of infection. Others, like headaches, chills or sore throat, are common to lots of illnesses. So how do you know when a symptom is cause to seek medical advice or testing? We asked doctors and public health and infectious disease researchers for their insights.
