Indigenous activists and their supporters celebrated Sunday night after the Obama administration halted construction on a segment of the Dakota Access pipeline that would cross under Lake Oahe near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.
For months, thousands of protesters have demonstrated against the pipeline, which they say threatened the reservation’s water supply and sacred land, occasionally in the face of harsh treatment by police.
In a statement, Dave Archambault II, tribal chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux, praised the Obama administration’s decision and thanked tribal youth and the group’s supporters “around the globe” for their role in halting the pipeline.

As Florida prepares for Hurricane Matthew’s arrival, cities in Cuba and Haiti are already coping with the aftermath of what Reuters called the “fiercest Caribbean storm in nearly a decade.”
The hurricane made landfall in Les Anglais, Haiti, early Tuesday morning, and up to 40 inches of rain in certain parts of the country. These conditions resulted in the deaths of at least 69 people, according to Reuters.
“We’ve already seen deaths. People who were out at sea. There are people who are missing. They are people who didn’t respect the alerts. They’ve lost their lives,” Interim Haitian President Jocelerme Privert said at a press conference reported on by CNN.

French police said at least 140 people were killed and dozens were wounded in a series of attacks at at least seven locations in Paris, including shootings at several restaurants and cafes in the city Friday night. At least 100 people were killed inside Paris’ Le Bataclan music hall after terrorists stormed the theater, taking concert goers hostage and systematically killing them. Another at least 40 people died in attacks throughout the city.
A shooting occurred at the Le Petit Cambodge restaurant in the city’s 10th district. At the same time there were reports of an explosion at a bar near Stade de France. An explosion could be heard clearly during the soccer match between France and Germany.
“Everyone was outside on the terrace of the restaurant when all of a sudden we saw these masked men start firing in all directions,” a witness outside the Le Petit Cambodge restaurant told the BBC. “It felt like it lasted a long time.”

Dozens of New York City-area energy industry executives and truck drivers were arrested Tuesday as part of a law enforcement probe into a suspected scam on customers.
DNAinfo reports the bust includes over 40 “owners, executives and truck drivers from some of the city’s largest fuel oil companies” who police accuse of rigging oil trucks to shortchange customers on heating oil. The alleged scammers, who DNAinfo reported include eight owners of fuel companies and three transportation depots, are accused of scamming developers and city agencies, including police and fire departments and those serving “the homeless and city schoolchildren.”
Alleged victims also included the owners of smaller buildings who purchased oil from the companies implicated.
Prosecutors said the trucks were equipped with “diverter valves” that gave fake readouts of how much oil each customer was being delivered, DNAinfo reported. They also allegedly used other tricks to fool measuring devices designed to prevent fraud.
