With just a drop of blood doctors may one day be able to detect pancreatic cancer in its early stages, before it has become deadly, a new study suggests.
An international team of researchers was able to identify 100 percent of patients with late-stage pancreatic cancer, as well as those with earlier stage disease, by looking for a protein in the blood that is made in abundance by tumor cells.
That protein turns up in tiny virus-sized particles, called exosomes, which are excreted by all of the body’s cells, according to the study published in Nature. But, by good fortune, the protein turns up in exosomes only when there is cancer, so its presence could be an early, and testable, marker for the disease.

With more than 1,300 officers fanned out across northern New York’s dense forest hunting for the remaining escapee who broke out of a maximum-security prison, a state trooper, alone in his car, spotted a jogger near a rain-soaked field two miles from the Canadian border.
“Hey, come over here,” Sgt. Jay Cook, a 21-year veteran called to the man, according to an account by New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico.
The jogger ignored him. Cook called out again.

Chanting “Bring it down!”, hundreds of people rallied Tuesday at the South Carolina State House to demand that the Confederate battle flag be removed from the grounds.
They pushed for state lawmakers to follow a call by Gov. Nikki Haley to remove the flag after a white gunman slaughtered nine black people, including a state senator, at a church in Charleston last week.
“It’s time for South Carolina to get past its history,” said J. Elliott Summey, president of the Charleston County Council. “History belongs in a place. It belongs in a museum, not on sovereign ground.”

Even conservative calculations show the world is in the midst of a sixth mass extinction that’s being caused by our species — and is likely to lead to humanity’s demise if unchecked, scientists reported Friday.
The scientists’ analysis, published in the open-access journal Science Advances, follows up on more than a decade’s worth of warnings about a rapid loss of global biodiversity. Many experts say the loss has risen to the scale seen during five previous global extinction events — the most recent of which occurred 65 million years ago when the dinosaurs died off.
The claims provide the theme of Elizabeth Kolbert’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “The Sixth Extinction.” But such claims have drawn skeptical responses as well. The skeptics say it’s difficult to judge the “background rate” of extinctions, as well as the current rate of species extinction.

A suspected gunman who ambushed Dallas police headquarters Saturday morning was shot and is believed to be dead, the city’s police chief said.
SWAT snipers struck the suspect through the windshield of his van in the Dallas suburb of Hutchins during a standoff in which no officers or civilians were hurt, Police Chief David Brown told reporters.
But because officers found bags with explosives that had been “spread out all over police headquarters,” police were not approaching the van, he said.

Leading all the way, American Pharoah barreled down the stretch and on to victory at the 147th Belmont Stakes Saturday, becoming the first horse in 37 years to win the Triple Crown.
The champion 3-year-old horse seized the lead early and held off all comers in the eight-horse field, and sped away to an insurmountable lead as the crowd roared. American Pharoah covered the 1 1/2 mile distance in 2:26.65, besting the field by 5 1/2 lengths.
“Steady, steady, all the way around,” jubilant jockey Victor Espinoza said after the win. “I had the best feeling after when I took the first turn.

A rare set of identical female triplets — including two conjoined at the pelvis — have been born at a south Texas hospital.
Corpus Christi Medical Center said the three baby girls — Catalina, Ximena and Scarlett — were delivered Saturday by C-Section one day shy of 34 weeks. All weighed 4 pounds, 11 ounces and were currently breathing without the assistance of a respirator, the hospital said.
Parents Sylvia Hernandez and Roel Torrez called the girls a miracle sent from God.
“God chose us to take care of these babies,” Torrez said in a statement released by the hospital. “We put our faith in God’s hands first and everything will be alright.”

A senior al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula leader who claimed the group’s responsibility for the Charlie Hebdo massacre and the murder of an American hostage during a botched raid in December has been killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen, it was announced Thursday.
Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) announced the death of leader Nasr bin Ali al-Ansi and other operatives by a U.S. drone strike in a video, which was verified by security consulting firm and NBC News partner Flashpoint Intelligence.
Al-Ansi had appeared in several militant videos for the group, including one claiming responsibility for the Paris attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on Jan. 7, which left 12 people dead.
