There are at least 555 reasons to ask whether American children are safer from gun violence today than they were three years ago, when the unthinkable happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
That’s how many kids under the age of 12 have died from gunshots — both intentional and accidental — since Adam Lanza stormed into the school in Newtown, Connecticut, on Dec. 14, 2012, and shot dead 20 children and six staff members, according to an NBC News analysis.

Delighted federal health officials said Thursday the number of smokers has plummeted by nearly 20 percent in the past 10 years and dropped a full percentage point in the last year alone.
They’re not sure of all the reasons why, but credit anti-smoking campaigns, better insurance coverage to help people kick the habit, and tougher laws that make it harder to smoke in a growing number places.
But the researchers note that people covered by Medicaid — the government health insurance plan for low-income people, and those who don’t have any health insurance at all are far more likely to smoke than people with good health insurance.

Greece’s prime minister angrily condemned Europe’s response to the refugee crisis Friday, accusing leaders of “crocodile tears” after 22 people drowned in two shipwrecks.
Alex Tsipras expressed “endless grief” at the latest tragedies, saying they had left Europe shamed.
He was speaking as the migrant death toll in the Aegean Sea reached nearly 50 over the past three days.
The Merchant Marine Ministry said 19 people were killed and 138 were rescued near the eastern Aegean Sea island of Kalymnos, in one of the worst accidents in Greek waters since the mass migrant flows started fleeing the war in Syria.

A two-year-old boy died Saturday evening from injuries the toddler suffered when a driver suspected to be under the influence plowed into a crowd at a homecoming parade at Oklahoma State University, according to police. Three other people were killed at the scene of horrific crash and more than 40 were injured, police said.
The 25-year-old driver of the car, Adacia Chambers, was charged with driving under the influence and taken into custody, Stillwater police Capt. Kyle Gibbs said at an afternoon news conference.
Chambers allegedly drove the 2014 Hyundai Elantra into an unmanned police motorcycle before striking the crowd at around 10:30 a.m. (11:30 a.m. ET), according to a statement from the Stillwater Police Department.

After decades of space exploration and countless movies on the subject, why exactly does Mars continue to inspire such high levels of cultural and scientific fascination?
Both the red planet and NASA are coasting on a wave of newfound popularity, taking center stage in big-budget Hollywood productions. Whether by coincidence or design, the favorable treatment of NASA by Tinseltown comes at a time when the space agency recently discovered evidence for flowing water on Mars, and last week openly declared colonizing the planet within the next 20 years “an achievable goal.” And at least a few scientists think the survival of humanity may hinge on finding a new, hospitable planet to colonize.
Just a few years ago, NASA critics and even some supporters were openly questioning whether the Mars science laboratory was worth its $2.5 billion price tag.

Federal regulators announced Monday that recreational drone operators will be required to register their aircraft.
“There can be no accountability if the person breaking the rules can’t be identified,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said at a news conference.
A task force of more than two dozen people will be responsible for creating guidelines for the national registry by Nov. 20, with the goal of instilling the program before the end of the holiday season, when around 1 million drones are expected to be sold.

It’ll be a while before all-in-one virtual reality headsets hit the shelves — the Oculus Rift system and HTC’s Vive won’t arrive until next year — but in the meantime, you can have a more DIY experience with Samsung’s latest Gear VR and a recent Galaxy S smartphone.
Any recent Samsung flagship phone (Galaxy S6, Edge, Edge+, or Note5) serves as the screen in the headset, which appeared in a more expensive, limited fashion earlier this year. Lenses inside separate the on-screen images so they go to the correct eye and produce the 3-D effect.
Head tracking and other functions are also handled by the phone, making the headset somewhat less of a dedicated solution than the complex systems used by HTC and Oculus. You’ll need to provide your own headphones as well. But with a price tag of $99 and expected to ship this November, Gear VR, unveiled Thursday, will be one of the easiest ways to access virtual reality content out there.

People who lay off butter and cheese and pour olive oil onto their salads instead live longer and lower their risk of heart disease, researchers reported Monday.
It’s one of the longest and most detailed studies yet about what, precisely, to substitute for artery-clogging fats and the answers are clear: although most Americans substitute sugary treats and white bread, the better path is to go for vegetable oils and whole grains.
While the advice is nothing new, this study done by the Harvard School of Public Health puts numbers on it.

Joaquin strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane Wednesday. On that, the meteorologists agree.
But the precarious path that the storm will take in the coming days — belting the East Coast or straying out to sea — remains a point of contention.
The American forecast model predicts Joaquin will veer northwestward, ramming into Virginia, Maryland or North Carolina this weekend. The European forecast model suggests Joaquin will avoid the East Coast entirely. And the National Hurricane Center forecast offers somewhat of a compromise between the two.

Baltimore officials have reached a $6.4 million settlement in the wrongful death of Freddie Gray, who sustained fatal neck injuries while in police custody in April.
The deal, first reported by the Washington Post and confirmed by NBC News on Tuesday, still needs to be approved by Baltimore’s spending overseer, the Board of Estimates. A vote on the proposal will take place on Wednesday.
The proposed settlement “should not be interpreted as a judgment on the guilt or innocence of the officers facing trial,” according to a statement from Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. “This settlement is being proposed solely because it is in the best interest of the city, and avoids costly and protracted litigation that would only make it more difficult for our city to heal and potentially cost taxpayers many millions more in damages.”
