America began accepting foreigners from seven predominantly Muslim nations into its borders Saturday after the government stopped enforcing President Donald Trump’s travel ban at airports — setting up a contentious fight with the White House over the immigration order.
The Department of Homeland Security said it will no longer force airlines to block those foreigners with visas from boarding planes, while the State Department also announced it has reversed the cancellation of visas under Trump’s executive order.
The order had barred people from Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Iran, Iraq and Yemen from entering the U.S. out of terrorism concerns. In addition, Syrian refugees who were stopped indefinitely under the ban are permitted to travel.
The State Department had said up to 60,000 foreigners had their visas “provisionally revoked” since the order went into effect a week ago.
The departments’ decisions essentially back up a federal judge in Seattle who on Friday halted Trump’s executive order.

A potential tragedy at a central Florida charter school was averted when students sounded the alarm that two of their classmates were planning to “shoot up the school on Friday.”
The whistleblowers alerted authorities that the accused teenagers had warned certain students at the Villages Charter Middle School to wear white shirts and say the safety word “Eugene” to avoid getting shot, according to a police report released by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
A 13-year-old suspect “was intercepted by authorities as he attempted to arrive” at the school on Wednesday, the sheriff’s office revealed in a press release.
“At the time, he acknowledged conversations involving the plot and referenced the mass shootings at Columbine High School,” the sheriff’s office said.
The teenage suspect also implicated a 14-year-old boy who was “quickly” located at the school, which is located in the town of The Villages, about 60 miles west of Orlando.

Heavy-hitting lawyers plan to sue President Donald Trump in federal court Monday over business interests that they say put him in violation of the Constitution by receiving payments from foreign governments.
The nonprofit good-government group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, will file the suit Monday morning in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, the organization said.
The suit alleges that Trump violated the Constitution the moment he was sworn in as president on Friday because he had not divested his interests in the Trump Organization

Brandishing signs reading “The future is female” and “Make America kind again,” tens of thousands of women in a sea of pink hats marched on the nation’s capital Saturday, raising their voices in direct opposition to Donald Trump.
As Trump attended a prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral on his first full day as president, protesters from across the country descended on D.C., arriving in buses, caravans and packing public transportation to gather near the National Mall and hear from prominent women’s rights activists, lawmakers and celebrities. A slow-moving procession began Saturday afternoon along Constitution Avenue toward the Washington Monument, and planned to end near the White House.
Organizers say the Women’s March on Washington was intentionally scheduled for the day after the presidential inauguration with the aim of sending a powerful message to the newly minted administration: Women’s rights are human rights.

President Donald Trump’s Inauguration Day was marred by noisy demonstrations, shoving matches and sporadic clashes with cops that resulted in more than 200 arrests.
Three-thousand members of local, state and federal law enforcement — backed by 5,000 National Guard members and police officers from as far away as New Jersey — patrolled the streets as the evening’s festivities got under way and the legions of protesters still seething over the Manhattan mogul’s unexpected victory threatened more disruptions.
Acting Police Chief Peter Newsham said that by around 6:30 p.m. ET things had calmed down, but authorities were still monitoring several groups.
At the same time, police are preparing for the Women’s March on Washington set for Saturday that is expected to draw 200,000 protesters — a number that inaugural historian Jim Bendat said could break records.

Rescuers were working to free eight survivors Friday who had endured an almost two-day ordeal buried under 16 feet of snow in the ruins of an avalanche-hit Italian hotel.
Earlier, a young boy and a woman were freed by emergency workers. In emotional scenes captured on video, crews were seen working around a deep hole with what appears to be a tiled floor beneath it.
The rescuers erupted into a chorus of cheers and cries of “Bravo!” when the child was brought to the surface after being trapped for more than 40 hours.
After the woman was pulled out, she spoke urgently to the workers, and appeared to point back down towards the rubble. Her speech was not picked up clearly by the cameras.
Both of the survivors shown being rescued were conscious and displayed no obvious sign of serious injuries.

Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been extradited to the United States, Mexico’s government said Thursday, a little more than a year after the Sinaloa cartel leader was caught following his brazen escape from a maximum-security prison.
Several U.S. jurisdictions want to try the former leader of the Sinaloa cartel on federal drug trafficking charges, including prosecutors in San Diego, New York, El Paso, Texas, Miami and Chicago.
A plane carrying Guzman landed at MacArthur Airport on Long Island, New York, at around 9:30 p.m., where dozens of U.S. marshals and other law enforcement officers were gathered.
The Justice Department said Guzman was will “face criminal charges in connection with his leadership of the Mexican organized crime syndicate known as the ‘Sinaloa Cartel,” and is charged in six separate indictments in the U.S.

Last year was the hottest year ever recorded, marking the third year in a row that average global temperatures hit record-setting levels, NASA and NOAA said Wednesday.
“That’s pretty unusual, but what’s going on is this a long-term underlying trend that’s driven mainly by greenhouse gases and the fact that carbon dioxide is continuing to increase,” NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies Director Gavin Schmidt told NBC News.
The average temperature across global land and ocean surfaces was 58.69 degrees Fahrenheit, 1.69 degrees above the 20th century average, NOAA said Wednesday morning.
NASA and NOAA, which separately analyze global temperature data, have both found that global temperatures surpassed records for the past three years. Schmidt described the trend as remarkable.

While George H.W. Bush remains in the intensive care unit of a Houston hospital after experiencing “shortness of breath,” the former president’s wife, Barbara, has also been admitted for a separate health issue, the couple’s spokesman said Wednesday.
The former first lady was taken to Houston Methodist Hospital on Wednesday morning “as a precaution after experiencing fatigue and coughing,” spokesman Jim McGrath said in a new statement following an update on her husband’s condition.
Her husband, 92-year-old Bush, was taken to Houston Methodist Hospital to treat an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia, the statement said.
“Doctors performed a procedure to protect and clear his airway that required sedation,” McGrath said. “President Bush is stable and resting comfortably in the ICU, where he will remain for observation.”
