A new study finds binge drinking to be a habit among some senior citizens, too.
.
Just more than 10% of older adults binge drink, putting them at risk for health problems, according to findings published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Researchers surveyed more than 10,000 adults older than 64 about their alcohol use over the prior month between 2015 and 2017.
.
Excessive alcohol consumption is considered a risky behavior for older adults due to aging-related physical changes, such as an increased risk of falling, experts said. The likelihood of having chronic health issues is also a concern for older binge drinkers.

South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg expressed concerns Saturday that the U.S. is “under attack” by white nationalists carrying out mass shootings — and those white nationalists have been encouraged by President Donald Trump.
Buttigieg was one of 19 Democratic presidential candidates speaking at a forum in Las Vegas sponsored by the public-sector labor union AFSCME. During the event, co-moderated by HuffPost’s Amanda Terkel and The Nevada Independent’s Jon Ralston, news broke of a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, in which at least 20 people were killed and 26 others injured.
Unconfirmed reports indicated the suspected shooter, a 21-year-old from the Dallas area, posted a manifesto to the 8chan message board hours before the shooting, in which he allegedly professed his white nationalist ideology and his belief that Texas is under “Hispanic invasion.” Law enforcement officials said they are aware of the document but have yet to confirm the shooter did, in fact, write it.

At least 20 people were killed on Saturday in an armed attack at a Walmart in El Paso, the nation’s second mass shooting in less than a week after three fatalities at a garlic festival in Gilroy, Calif., last Sunday.
Saturday’s bloodshed in Texas represented the 31st mass killing by firearms in 2019. A mass killing is defined by the Justice Department as three or more killings in a single episode. There is no legal definition for the term “mass shooting,” despite its frequent use by gun control groups and the news media.

Twenty people have been killed in a mass shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, authorities said, and police have a 21-year-old male suspect in custody.
The Saturday morning massacre also injured 26 people, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said at a press conference.
“Texas grieves for the people of El Paso today,” Abbott said. “A day that would have been a normal day for someone to leisurely go shopping turned into one of the most deadly days in the history of Texas. Lives were taken who should still be with us today.”
Del Sol Medical Center spokesman Victor Guerrero told HuffPost the El Paso hospital has 11 patients from the shooting, nine of whom were in critical condition. The other two he listed as stable condition.
Police said blood donations are “needed urgently.”

So… you mean to tell me that someone down your ancestry line survived being chained to other human bodies for several months in the bottom of a disease-infested ship during the Middle Passage, lost their language, customs and traditions, picked up the English language as best they could while working free of charge from sun up to sun down as they watched babies sold from out of their arms and women raped by ruthless slave owners.

“Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert,” begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it’s happening to about two-thirds of the world’s grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes — and his work so far shows — that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert.

The inevitable has happened. Microplastics have already been found in birds and fish and whales, so it should have come as no surprise that they have now been discovered in humans. To be specific but indelicate, tiny plastic particles and fibers have been found in the stool of eight people who provided samples as part of a pilot study.
This news confirms the predictions of researchers who have tracked microplastics to remote locations, and identified these tiny particles in drinking water, beer, table salt, and seafood. But the implications in this particular case remain unclear.
The fact that this is the first documentation of such materials in humans is significant. Yet such a small survey can’t begin to answer the unknowns that hang over the science of microplastics: Where precisely did these plastic fragments originate? And what are the potential risks to human health?

Microplastics – What are they?
Plastic pieces less than 5 millimeters in size are commonly called microplastics. Microplastics are used in manufacturing, industry, and 3D printing. They are in consumer products such as synthetic clothing fabric, toothpaste, and skincare products. They are also formed when plastics break apart into tiny beads.
When microplastics wash down a drain, they are not filtered by wastewater treatment. They spread far across and throughout the ocean. Major sources of microplastics include:
-
Agricultural runoff
-
Aquaculture
-
Cruise ships
-
Ocean dumping
-
Stormwater
-
The shipping and fishing industries
-
Urban runoff
-
Waste management

The Brooks Range is a mountain range in far northern North America stretching some 700 miles from west to east across northern Alaska into Canada’s Yukon Territory. Reaching a peak elevation of 8,976 feet on Mount Isto, the range is believed to be approximately 126 million years old.
