Explosions and gunfire rocked the center of the Indonesian capital on Thursday in an attack that raised the specter of an expanding Islamic State presence in Southeast Asia. At least two civilians were killed, the authorities said, along with five assailants.
The assailants targeted a police traffic post on a busy thoroughfare, then set off explosions in an apparent suicide attack outside a Starbucks coffee shop across the street. Security forces stormed the area, and the police later said they had arrested four suspects.
The Islamic State took responsibility for the attack in a statement released on its official Telegram channel, an encrypted phone app.

All he did was ask to go home.
The last time the Burmese slave made the same request, he was beaten almost to death. But after being gone eight years and forced to work on a boat in faraway Indonesia, Myint Naing was willing to risk everything to see his mother again.
So he threw himself on the ground and begged for freedom. Instead, the captain vowed to kill him for trying to jump ship, and chained him for three days without food or water.
He was afraid he would disappear. And that his mother would have no idea where to look.

More than 430 migrants stranded at sea were brought ashore to safety by Indonesian fishermen
A flotilla of Indonesian fishermen rescued more than 430 migrants who were stranded at sea and brought them ashore to safety Wednesday, the latest victims of a humanitarian crisis confronting Southeast Asia. Hoping to find a solution, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia held an emergency meeting to address the plight of the migrants who are fleeing persecution in Burma and poverty in Bangladesh.
The migrants were rescued early Wednesday by more than a dozen fishermen’s boats, said Herman Sulaiman, from East Aceh district’s Search and Rescue Agency.

A rumbling volcano in western Indonesia that has been spewing lava and clouds of gas high into the sky let out a new, powerful burst Tuesday, prompting warnings for airplanes and triggering panic among villagers, officials said.
Nine eruptions Tuesday sent lava and searing gas tumbling out of Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province, said Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.
The volcano started spitting clouds of gas and lava as high as 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) in the air late Monday, but no casualties were reported.
He said more than 19,000 people have been evacuated from villages in a danger zone 5 kilometers (3 miles) around the crater to temporary shelters since authorities raised the alert status for Sinabung to the highest level in November.
Gray ash covered villages, farms and trees as far as 70 kilometers (43 miles) southeast of the mountain.
