Listen up, all you wild-eyed Republicans pressing for transgender bathroom bills in the name of protecting vulnerable women and children from assault. Look among your own ranks and you’ll find quite a few who have posed a danger to kids. In the last three weeks alone, two key GOP spokesmen have been busted for advocating man-on-boy sex. By contrast, there has not been a single reported instance of a transgender person harassing a non-transgender person in a public restroom e.
The latest GOP black eye involves one of Trump’s earliest campaign supporters and Oklahoma county coordinators. Married-with-children Ralph Shortey was released yesterday on $100,000 bail after getting caught with a 17-year-old male, an open packet of condoms and a bottle of lotion in a Super 8 hotel, 936 feet from the First Christian Church. The family values legislator is charged with three felonies: engaging in child prostitution, knowingly engaging in prostitution within 1,000 feet of a church and transporting a minor for prostitution/lewdness. Of course, in the American legal system, he is innocent until proven guilty.
That said, it’s going to be mighty tough for Shortey to explain away sending a text to a youth who offers to pay for prior to taking the boy to a local .

Chamroeun Phan grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, and, by all measures, isn’t a menacing guy. At 34, he’s slight of build, a brown-skinned Cambodian-American who wears a long black ponytail, rocks Milwaukee Brewers baseball caps, and has an affinity for flyfishing in the summer. His friends nicknamed him “Shorty,” and for four years he worked as a repair engineer at a local technology company that specializes in making equipment that businesses use to make everyday transactions — barcode scanners, mostly.
The one big blemish on Phan’s record is the night in 2009, when he broke three windows at a bar that he often went to play poker with his then-fiancé and six older brothers and sisters. Even the bar’s owner said that he was a “great person” but had “a little too much to drink.” Still, Phan was charged with felony first-degree damage. He spent 40 days in jail, and then moved on.
But, seven years later on Aug. 28, 2016, Phan was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. His time in jail had made him a “criminal alien,” and he suddenly found himself being threatened with deportation back to a country that he’s never seen. So far, he’s spent more than 200 days in detention — five times the amount of time he spent for breaking the bar’s windows.

Who killed Walter Scott? Apparently, we’re not really sure.
That’s according to a jury in Charleston, South Carolina, which was unable to reach a reach a verdict Monday in the murder trial of Michael Slager, who shot Scott and whose actions were captured by a witness in a video that went viral.
Of course, the jury has its reasons — apparently one juror, identified only as a 50-year-old male in press reports, said he “cannot in good conscience consider a guilty verdict.” may still wind up being put on trial again.
But the takeaway for black people whose daily encounters with police end in harassment, violence or death, is simple: Our lives don’t matter, even when they’re being taken in front of millions of viewers.

The of former reality television star Donald Trump to the highest office in the land has many Americans concerned, and for lots of different reasons. Trump campaigned on a platform of deportation, anti-Muslim bigotry and an economic plan that hundreds of economists agreed could be “dangerous” and “destructive.” But what about LGBTQ rights?
Trump’s supporters and far right media outlets have claimed that he supports, even champions, rights for LGBTQ communities — but his Cabinet picks and choice of vice president tell a much different story.
Our new vice president-elect has a troubling history of attacks on LGBTQ rights in his home state of Indiana, where he served as Governor. In 2015, Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act into law in the state, paving the way for discrimination against LGBTQ people by permitting business owners to refuse service to anyone on the basis of religious belief.

A federal jury acquitted Ammon Bundy and six other armed ranchers Thursday. They were found not guilty of weapons and conspiracy charges for their weeks-long armed takeover of a federal wildlife facility in Oregon in January.
They were innocent because they were white.
At least that’s the conclusion of plenty of observers who sounded off on social media, who noted that black people who protested the deaths of unarmed men and boys were often met with brutal force from police and the full brunt of the law.

On Tuesday, crowds of women across the country synced up for one big goal: to get the Republican Party to disavow, denounce and unendorse the sexist, xenophobic pussy-grabber Donald Trump.
Women of all ages — and some men, too — dressed in black, and according to Jezebel, chanted “Donald thinks he runs this town, pussy came to shut it down!” They also shouted “GOP, hands off me!”
The #GOPHandsOffMe rallies took place in New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Boston, Denver, Seattle and Oakland, California.
Yong Jung Cho, 26, is one of the main organizer for the protests. She says the #GOPHandsOffMe rallies, primarily organized women of color and survivors of sexual assault, are a response to the policies pushed by the GOP in the last five decades.

Halfway through Sunday’s presidential debate in St. Louis, Donald Trump turned to his audience.
“,” he said. “We have a divided nation because people like her” — he pointed at Hillary Clinton for effect — “and believe me: She has tremendous hate in her heart.”
In this election, as in others past, calling the other candidate “divisive” is a go-to insult. George W. Bush famously described himself as “a uniter, not a divider” during his first presidential primary campaign. Mitt Romney condemned President Barack Obama in similar terms when he ran against him in 2012.
“Mr. President, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago,” he said during a campaign stop in Ohio.
To be divisive, the logic goes, is to be incapable of getting Americans on the same page so you can lead them. It is an impediment to progress, which relies on the ideal that we remain — even against steep odds — “one nation … indivisible.”

Of the more than 16,000 words uttered at Sunday night’s debate, not one of them was “Ferguson.”
The debate took place at Washington University in St. Louis, an eight-mile drive from the suburb that erupted in rebellion following the 2014 death of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, and the failure to indict the officer who shot him, Darren Wilson. It was a moment that shifted America’s discourse around race and policing, and helped usher in the Black Lives Matter movement.
But if you watched Hillary Clinton duel Donald Trump on Sunday, you’d never know it happened. On a night filled with personal vitriol unlike any other we’ve witnessed in modern political history, Ferguson — and the demands for a radical rethinking of black life in America that it prompted — wasn’t even a footnote. Instead, the candidates spoke about race in vague generalities that often missed the point entirely.

As of 5, black people had been killed by law enforcement officers in the United States in 2016 alone. The circumstances leading to their deaths varied greatly. The reasons, generally, did not.
Filmmaker Ava DuVernay, who directed the Academy Award-nominated Selma, explores these reasons in 13th, a powerful 200-minute documentary that premieres on Netflix Friday. The film tells the story of how white, wealthy and politically-powerful Americans responded to the abolition of slavery in by creating new forms of bondage for black people — and encoding them through a racist criminal justice system.
These forms of bondage included, but were not limited to, aggressive incarceration and its fallout, including parole. The film argues these systems are maintained today through racially asymmetrical law enforcement practices — including racial profiling by police and, more recently, mandatory minimum jail sentences for nonviolent drug offenses.

This is James Parker Sheffield, a 36-year-old transgender man in Decatur, Georgia. On Thursday, he had some pretty pointed words for Gov. Pat McCrory after North Carolina passed an anti-trans law mandating every person in the state to use the bathroom that correspond to their assigned gender at birth.
“@PatMcCroryNC It’s now the law for me to share a restroom with your wife,” Sheffield tweeted the North Carolina governor along with a stern-faced, bearded selfie of himself wearing a camouflage University of Georgia baseball cap.
The tweet quickly went viral, but Sheffield doesn’t actually think his joke is that funny.
“It’s super funny to think about some bearded hillbilly in a stall next to the governor’s wife while she clutches her pearls,” he said on Friday in a phone interview. “But it would never play out that way in reality.”
