PLAISTOW, N.H. — A fugitive couple arrested at a Florida theme park waived extradition and will voluntarily return to New Hampshire to face charges in the beating and burning of the woman’s 3-year-old son.
A judge in Orlando, Fla., accepted the waiver from 23-year-old Jessica Linscott and her boyfriend, 27-year-old Roland Dow, on Friday morning during an informal document exchange with an Orange County Sheriff’s Office representative. Neither were in the courtroom and it’s unclear how quickly they’ll return to New Hampshire.

I’ve spoken twice at TED. The first time was in 2006. TED was a very different event then. It was a private conference for about 1,200 people. After the event, the talks were packaged in a box set of DVDs and sent just to the attendees. I gave a talk called “Do Schools Kill Creativity?” A few months later, Chris Anderson, the curator of TED, called to say they were planning to put a few talks on their website as an experiment and asked if they could include mine. The timing was perfect. Social media was beginning to take shape and the insatiable appetite for YouTube and short videos was about to emerge.

There is so much to like about Sir Ken Robinson’s TEDTalk — Do Schools Kill Creativity? — that I hardly know where to start. That said, here is a single sentence from his TEDTalk that deserves affirmation and discussion:
“We think visually, we think in sound, we think kinesthetically,” Sir Ken points out while discussing different types of intelligence.

In a New Jersey courtroom last month, federal prosecutors described Andrew Auernheimer as a publicity-hungry hacker who violated the privacy of thousands of iPad owners by disclosing their email addresses to a reporter.
A jury agreed, finding him guilty of identity theft and conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to computers. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

HuffPost Food recently went on a tour de force of some of America’s major casual dining chains. Regardless of your taste in cuisine, chances are you’ve found yourself at a casual dining restaurant before, whether one is your go-to Friday night spot or a road trip-only meal. These national chains pride themselves on creating a menu that can appeal to a wide variety of eaters. But are these calorie-heavy appetizers worth it? We pitted eight appetizers from eight casual dining chains against each other to find out. Week 8: Chicken Strips.

WASHINGTON — The nation’s state legislators concluded their fall forum here Friday by praising bipartisanship through a tribute to their former leader, who was ousted from his own legislative seat in a bitter Republican Party war that pitted moderates against conservatives.
Kansas Senate President Steve Morris (R-Hugoton) was given a minute-long standing ovation by members of the National Conference of State Legislatures for his leadership of the group.

Collisions between particles inside the Large Hadron Collider atom smasher have created what looks like a new form of matter.
The new kind of matter is called color-glass condensate, and is a liquidlike wave of gluons, which are elementary particles related to the strong force that sticks quarks together inside protons and neutrons (hence they are like “glue”).

Astronomers have seen a distant galaxy that blasts away material with two trillion times the energy the sun emits — the biggest such eruption ever seen. That ejection of matter could answer an important question about the universe: why are the black holes in the centers of galaxies so light?
Computer models of the early universe usually produce a virtual cosmos that looks like ours except for one thing. The ratio of the mass of black holes in galaxy centers to the rest of the matter in galaxies is larger in the simulations than in the real universe.

NASA announced Thursday that its Messenger probe has discovered new evidence of water ice on Mercury.
In the announcement, Sean Solomon, principal investigator for the Mercury Messenger program, said the probe had uncovered new evidence that deposits in permanently shadowed regions of Mercury’s poles is water ice. The ice is found predominantly in impact craters, according to data obtained by Messenger.
