It might seem like the stuff of fantasy, but two pioneering brands are making claims about turning flying cars into reality. Jeremy White looks at whether it’s blue sky thinking.

Ah, the future. Meals will be pills (delivered by personal robots, no doubt), living on the moon will be a reality and, of course, flying cars will be de rigueur. Yes, ever since the Curtiss Autoplane was unveiled at the Pan-American Aeronautic Exposition in New York in February 1917 we seem to be obsessed with the dream of making automobiles fly, with The Jetsons and Back to the Future keeping that excitement fuelled.

The Curtiss Autoplane was a triplane, using the wings from a Curtiss Model L trainer on an aluminum body that resembled a Model T Ford. It had three seats, with the pilot/chauffeur sitting in the front and two passengers side-by side in the rear.

Scared of flying? Then you might not like the airplanes of the future.

Sure there are some terrifying-sounding features (transparent cabins and harvesting body heat) in the proposed designs for future planes, but the decisions to go greener are all ideas we can get behind.
