The ocean is to James Cameron as tacky gold fixtures are to Donald Trump: an obsession.
But luck wasn’t always on his side. After quitting his job as a truck driver to pursue filmmaking following a screening of Star Wars, Cameron fell under the wing of The Pope of Pop Cinema, Roger Corman. His first big film gig, as special effects director of the B-movie Piranha II: The Spawning, a film about killer piranhas, turned into his directorial debut when the original helmer, Miller Drake, was let go. But that film’s producer, Ovidio Assonitis, scrutinized his every decision before kicking Cameron out of the editing room, hijacking the film. As the story goes, while Assonitis was editing the film in Rome, Cameron came down with an awful bout of food poisoning, and during his delirium, had a nightmare about a cyborg assassin called a Terminator.
But it wasn’t until 1989’s The Abyss, about an underwater drilling team that encounters “non-terrestrial intelligence” deep underwater, that Cameron’s ocean infatuation was truly born. Since then, he’s stewarded 1997’s Titanic, which received a record 14 Oscar nominations—winning 11, including Best Picture and Best Director—and has filmed a number of deep-sea exploration documentaries, such as Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep, and once took a deep-diving submersible to the lowest point of the ocean, the Mariana Trench, where he discovered several new underwater species.

FBI Director James Comey said in a letter to members of Congress on Sunday that the bureau reviewed all emails to and from Hillary Clinton that were recovered on Anthony Weiner’s laptop, and found nothing in them that changes his conclusion in July that Clinton did not commit a crime.
Comey rocked the presidential campaign when he informed Congress, just 11 days before the election, that the FBI found emails “pertient” to its closed investigation into Clinton’s private server on a computer belonging to Weiner, the estranged husband of Clinton aide Huma Abedin. Democrats and Republicans demanded more answers from the FBI in the days following Comey’s vague letter.
“Since my letter, the FBI investigative team worked around the clock to process and review a large volume of emails from a device obtained in an unrelated criminal investigation,” Comey wrote to lawmakers on Sunday, two days before Election Day. “During that process, we reviewed all of the communications that were to or from Hillary Clinton while she was Secretary of State. We have not changed our conclusions that we expressed in July with respect to Secretary Clinton.”

Abu Khaled looked at me across the outdoor hookah café table in the touristy Laleli district of Istanbul. Across the street cars nearly careened into each other every other second in a busy interaction, semi-subterranean shops, their windows half-buried by the pavement, advertised everything from cellphones to toothpaste to the latest designer women’s fashions—or, at any rate, cheap knockoffs for those who didn’t know the difference or much care. Amid the din of an international city at rush hour was the scheduled call of the muezzin, leading the call to prayer, and an unremitting stream of awful European pop music being pumped through the café’s loudspeakers, which we’d asked in vain to have turned down.
Even though ISIS terror had struck inside Turkey the week before, the organization calling itself the Islamic State, al-Dawla al-Islamiya, felt very far away. Truly, Abu Khaled told me, the people who run it want their subjects to live as if in a world of their own, captive minds in a closed society. But the real world is a small place, and this defector from the ISIS intelligence services said he was not the only one who had grown restive.
