There are at least 555 reasons to ask whether American children are safer from gun violence today than they were three years ago, when the unthinkable happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
That’s how many kids under the age of 12 have died from gunshots — both intentional and accidental — since Adam Lanza stormed into the school in Newtown, Connecticut, on Dec. 14, 2012, and shot dead 20 children and six staff members, according to an NBC News analysis.
Pro Football Hall of Famer and veteran sports journalist Frank Gifford has died in Connecticut, his family announced on Sunday. He was 84.
In a statement, his family said:
It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and friend, Frank Gifford. Frank died suddenly this beautiful Sunday morning of natural causes at his Connecticut home. We rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live, and we feel grateful and blessed to have been loved by such an amazing human being. We ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time and we thank you for your prayers.
Born in Santa Monica, California, in 1930, Gifford attended the University of Southern California on a football scholarship and went pro after being selected 11th overall in the first round of the 1952 draft.

What frustrates Hanna Newberg about her life right now isn’t just that she’s working as a waitress at a chain restaurant or renting a small apartment in western Massachusetts. The problem, Newberg says, is that she did everything she was told she was supposed to do — went to college, went to graduate school — and still, she’s waiting tables.
Newberg, 26, is like millions of young Americans who are finding that the paths they assumed would lead them to middle-class lives — the paths many of their parents took — no longer promise economic stability. The long wake of the recession has exposed an American economy that has been restructured over the last three decades. As a result, many jobs that once made it possible to reach the middle class are less reliable.
Newberg grew up in a home where her father’s paycheck was modest but consistent. Steve Newberg, 60, a tall lanky man with long pulled back hair, has been a postal worker since two years before Hanna, the older of his two daughters, was born. Steve’s wife, Robin Newberg, 54, had worked as an elementary school teacher and then left to raise their children in their well-kept home in a quiet semi-rural street in Granby, Connecticut.
The streets of downtown Stamford will transform into one large art exhibit this weekend for the City’s first ever Artwalk. The free event, created by the Stamford Downtown Special Services District, will showcase more than 90 artists in shops, restaurants, and galleries downtown.
Stamford DSSD President Sandy Goldstein says, “We want to make sure that people recognize the downtown as an art venue.”
Patrons can visit over 35 venues on the Artwalk route, where they will run into live music, performances, and special activities a long the way.
Artwalk curator Valerie Cooper says, “It’s just a wonderful conglomerate of diversity, culture, of different nationalities, and my vision was to put something together that reflected exactly what Stamford sort of stands for.”
The Old Town Hall Museum and UConn’s campus art gallery are just two of six participating galleries that will feature special exhibits for the event.
Connecticut authorities arrested an elderly woman on prostitution charges following a raid at a Glastonbury hotel.
According to agent James Kennedy of the Glastonbury Police Department, authorities were tipped off to 71-year-old Sygun Liebhart’s alleged prostitution activities by an advertisement in the classified section of Backpage.com.
