This week marks the tenth anniversary of the iPhone. For hundreds of millions of us, this device — just 4 ounces when introduced — has come to dominate our lives. Now we can find seemingly any answer to anything with a few taps of the thumb and forefinger. Everything from dinner to a date is now just a click away, and you can procure both of those while simultaneously talking on a conference call — and riding the train, of course.

But as with every revolution, something or somebody loses. Yes, there is darker side to how the iPhone — and its smartphone copycats — have changed us.

German lawmakers voted by a wide margin to legalize same-sex marriage Friday, a landmark decision which came just days after Chancellor Angela Merkel dropped her longstanding opposition to a free vote on the issue.

The bill gives homosexual couples in Germany the same rights as heterosexual couples, and will allow same-sex couples to marry and jointly adopt children. It passed by 393 votes to 226, with four abstentions.

The bill is likely to pass through the Bundesrat — Germany’s upper house — next week. The Bundesrat has previously approved legalizing same-sex marriage.

The author Michael Bond, creator of the hugely popular children’s character Paddington Bear, has died at the age of 91.

Bond died at home on Tuesday following a short illness, his publisher HarperCollins announced Wednesday in a statement on Facebook, calling him a “giant of children’s literature.”

.

Bond was born in Berkshire, England in 1926 and began writing in 1945, after serving in World War II.

.

He was working as a cameraman for the BBC when he came up with the idea of a small toy bear that he named after Paddington Station in London, near where he was living at the time.

The purple faded. Then it came back. Kowalski’s heart raced.

“We only gave him one, and he needs another!” she called to a security guard in McPherson Square Park, a tranquil patch of green in one of this city’s roughest neighborhoods.

“He’s dying,” said a bystander, piling on as tension mounted around lunchtime one recent weekday.

.

“Where is the ambulance?” a woman begged.

“She’s just a teen-adult librarian — and saved six people since April. That’s a lot for a librarian.”

European Union regulators slapped Google with a record €2.4 billion ($2.7 billion) antitrust fine on Tuesday, the latest broadside fired at big American tech companies doing business in the region.

The European Commission found that the U.S. tech giant denied “consumers a genuine choice” by using its search engine to unfairly steer them to its own shopping platform.

Regulators said that Google must change its behavior within 90 days or face additional penalties.

“What Google has done is illegal under EU antitrust rules,” said Margrethe Vestager, the bloc’s top antitrust official. “It denied other companies the chance to compete on the merits and to innovate. And most importantly, it denied European consumers a genuine choice of services and the full benefits of innovation.”

Supreme Court agrees to hear religious liberty case next term

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a religious liberty case concerning a Colorado cake artist who refused to make a cake for a same-sex couple’s wedding reception, claiming that to do so violated his religious liberty under the Constitution.

The Court will take up the case, Masterpiece v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, in its next term, which starts in October.

The Supreme Court also ruled in favor of two married same-sex couples in Arkansas who challenged a state law that did not allow both members of a same-sex couple to be listed as parents on a birth certificate.

The decision in Pavan v. Smith was 6 to 3 and brings up equal protection concerns two years after the Supreme Court cleared the way for same sex couples.

Philando Castile’s family reaches $3 million settlement with city of St. Anthony

The family of Philando Castile, who was shot and killed last year by a St. Anthony, Minnesota police officer, has reached a $3 million settlement with the city, according to a statement from the city and lawyers for the family.

Jeronimo Yanez, who is leaving the force, was acquitted June 16 of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of intentional discharge of a firearm that endangers safety. Castile was killed July 6 during a traffic stop, and his girlfriend streamed the shooting’s aftermath on Facebook Live.

“The death of Philando Castile is a tragedy for his family and for our community,” the statement said. “The parties moved expeditiously to resolve potential civil claims resulting from this tragedy in order to allow the process of healing to move forward for the Castile family, for the people of St. Anthony Village, and for all those impacted by the death of Philando Castile throughout the United States.”

Pakistan fuel tanker truck explosion kills at least 153

At least 153 were killed Sunday when they rushed to collect leaking fuel from a crashed tanker in Bahawalpur, eastern Pakistan, before it suddenly exploded.

The truck veered off the road when the driver lost control, police official Mohammad Akhtar told CNN. As the tanker sat on the side of the road, fuel began leaking out in large pools.

Shortly afterwards an explosion tore the container open like a soda can, engulfing everything around the truck, including women and children, according to the government-run Associated Press of Pakistan.

Many victims died immediately, while others succumbed to their injuries at hospitals.

Britain’s embattled Prime Minister Theresa May has finally secured a governing majority in the UK Parliament after agreeing a £1 billion ($1.2 billion) deal with a political party with 10 MPs from Northern Ireland.

Under the deal, the 10 lawmakers from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) will back May’s minority government over the Queen’s Speech — which sets out the legislative program — as well as bills relating to national security and Brexit.

In return, the UK government has pledged an extra £1 billion ($1.2bn) investment over the next two years from the British government, in addition to £500 million ($600m) already committed.

Saudi security forces on Friday prevented an imminent attack on the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the country’s Interior Ministry said on state-run TV.

A suspect in the planned attack on the mosque blew himself up in a nearby neighborhood when security forces surrounded a home where the man was hiding, according to the ministry.

.

The suspect refused to comply with demands to surrender, opened fire on security forces and then killed himself, officials said.

The explosion caused the partial collapse of the building in which the suspect was hiding. Six expatriates were injured and taken to a hospital, and five security personnel received minor injuries, a Saudi Press official in London told CNN.
