In the wake of the recent deaths of Keith Scott and Terence Crutcher, actor Isaiah Washington has called on all African-Americans to boycott work this Monday, Sept. 26 ― the day of the first presidential debate ― to show the world that black lives matter.
Washington sent out his call to action on Facebook last Tuesday, also urging black people to boycott school and shopping for 24 hours.
Isaiah Washington
Imagine if every single African American in the United States that was really fed up with being angry, sad and disgusted, would pick ONE DAY to simply ‘stay at home’ from every single job, work site, sports arena and government office in the United States of America. I’m very sure that within 72 hours from Wall Street to the NFL…Black Lives Would Matter. September 26, 2016 is THE DAY. #ItsTime #CanWeDoIt? #ACallToAction #StayAtHomeSeptember262016 #RIPTerenceCrutcher #HandsUpDontShoot #Missing24
On Wednesday, the actor shared another post on the social media site, telling followers that he had partnered with Madelon “Blue” McCullough from #Missing24, which seems to be a Twitter account supporting Washington’s cause. On the social media site, #Missing24 is described as “a grassroots movement for our people by our people.”

A majority black jury will ultimately decide if William Porter can be found guilty in the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, a black man who died after a “rough ride” in a police van in April.
Court officials announced Wednesday that eight black and four white jurors will decide the fate of Porter, one of six Baltimore police officers charged in Gray’s death. Porter, who is black, has been charged with manslaughter, second-degree assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment.
A lot is hinging on the outcome of the case. Legal experts claim an acquittal could set the tone for the other five trials. Prosecutors also seek to use Porter as a material witness against at least two other officers.

Black lives matter in textbooks, too.
Fifteen-year-old Coby Burren underscored this point when he sent his mom, Roni Dean-Burren, a photo of a page from his ninth grade World Geography textbook which wrongly described African slaves as “workers.”
Dean-Burren posted her son’s text message to her Instagram page.
“The Atlantic slave trade brought millions of workers… notice the nuanced language there,” her caption read. “Workers implies wages… yes?”

On Monday, The New York Times published an article on murder rates that was misleading at best, and fear mongering at worst.
“Murder Rates Rising Sharply in Many U.S. Cities,” the headline screamed.
The lede was just as alarming. It spoke of “a startling rise in murders” this year in cities “across the nation,” chief among them Milwaukee, where the increase was said to be “precipitous” — 104 homicides in 2015 thus far, way above the 86 reported for all of 2014.

Authorities were continuing to hunt for a suspect Saturday in the “execution-style” shooting of a uniformed Texas sheriff’s deputy, while warning that “dangerous rhetoric” against law enforcement has “gotten out of control.”
“We’ve heard black lives matter — all lives matter,” a visibly angry Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman told reporters. “Well, cops’ lives matter, too.”
A person of interest was voluntarily taken in for questioning early Saturday, and authorities said that he was cooperating but did not provide details about his relationship to the case.

While Feidin Santana and Ramsey Orta are hardly household names, these men played pivotal roles in one of the most important civil rights stories of our time.
They made news by using their cellphone cameras to record the police killings of two unarmed black men: Walter Scott and Eric Garner. And though they may not have realized it at the time, such recording is constitutionally protected.
But that may be little comfort to people who record tense encounters between police and the public. After filming the April 4 shooting of Walter Scott, Santana told NBC News, “I felt that my life, with this information, might be in danger. I thought about erasing the video and just getting out of the community, you know Charleston, and living some place else.”

Carrying signs that read “Black Lives Matter,” protesters marched in Wisconsin on Saturday over the fatal shooting by a veteran police officer of an unarmed 19-year-old black man.
Tony Terrell Robinson Jr. was shot by Madison Police Officer Matt Kenny at around 6:30 p.m. Friday after Kenny followed Robinson and forced his way inside an apartment, police said. Police said Kenny was looking for Robinson after getting reports that a man was jumping in front of cars and who assaulted someone. He followed Robinson to an apartment, forced his way inside after hearing a disturbance, and fired after he was attacked, police said.
Some protesters who marched in Madison Saturday called Robinson’s death a murder.
