Mu Ko Ang Thong is a marine national park in the Gulf of Thailand, on the shores of the Surat Thani Province. It covers 42 islands in a total area of 102 km², of which only 18 km² are land. The park was established on 12 November 1980.

Morocco is a Northern African country, located in the extreme north west of Africa on the doors of continental Europe. The strait of Gibraltar separates Spain off Morocco with a 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) span of water. Morocco borders the North Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the west Mediterranean Sea to the north.

The Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of northwestern Africa, are rugged volcanic isles known for their black- and white-sand beaches. Tenerife, the largest island, is dominated by the sometimes-snowy active volcano Mt. Teide, which has its own astronomical observatory and is part of Teide National Park. Tenerife hosts a huge pre-Lent Carnival in the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

A castle is a type of fortified structure built in Europe and the Middle East during the Middle Ages by European nobility. Scholars debate the scope of the word castle, but usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble. This is distinct from a palace, which is not fortified; from a fortress, which was not always a residence for nobility; and from a fortified settlement, which was a public defence – though there are many similarities among these types of construction. Usage of the term has varied over time and has been applied to structures as diverse as hill forts and country houses. Over the approximately 900 years that castles were built, they took on a great many forms with many different features, although some, such as curtain walls and arrowslits, were commonplace.

African penguins out for a stroll on Boulders Beach, South Africa.

Most African penguins are island dwellers living off the southern coast of the continent. Somewhat mysteriously, a colony has taken up mainland residence at Boulders Beach, South Africa. Scientists aren’t certain why two breeding pairs arrived ashore in the early 1980s, but the place must suit this breed of banded penguins, as thousands of them are said to live here now. And that’s a good thing—African penguins are an endangered species whose numbers have dwindled alarmingly over the course of the last century.

The colony at Boulders Beach sometimes wanders close to the beach-going public, but the penguins are protected by local laws and authorities. And they’re literally watched-over by folks perched on boardwalks above Foxy Beach, the penguins’ main hangout.
