When you go shopping for shoes, you try them on. Before you buy a new suit, you also try it on. When you are in the market for a new car, I’m willing to bet you take it for a test drive. These are all relatively important decisions that you will make, mostly on a financial level. While it is difficult to trust a car salesman or even perhaps the man at the shoe store telling you that the pair you have picked out will be the “most comfortable pair of shoes you’ve ever worn”, for some reason when people undergo cosmetic surgery, they are fine leaving their future looks in the hands of a stranger.
Sure, there is much more extensive education required, and guidelines that must be followed when you go to school to become a plastic surgeon, especially when compared to someone looking at a career in automobile sales, but still thousands of individuals undergo the surgical knife every month in hopes of altering their looks for the better. While most of these surgeries turn out well, at least in the eyes of the patient — I must admit I’m no fan of football sized lips or breasts the size of watermelons — there are some patients who end up disappointed with their results.

3D printed prostheses have been coming to the aid of many children over the past couple of years. This can clearly be seen in the hundreds of 3D printed hands and arms which have changed the lives of children and adults around the world. As technology improves, 3D printing is also coming to the aid of individuals who are missing other body parts, making what was once impossible, suddenly possible.
One cute little two-year-old girl, named Tessa Evans, was born without a nose, and her parents Grainne and Nathan decided to do something about it now, rather than wait until she’s older. If they had waited, Tessa’s surgery not only would have been much more complicated and aggressive, but Tessa would have also had to have gone through her entire childhood and adolescence without being able to function entirely like a normal person. Tessa’s nose can not smell, nor does it have any sinuses, although she can still sneeze and even catch a cold. The disorder, referred to as arhinia, is extremely rare, so much so that there have only been 47 cases reported in medical history. It wasn’t until Tessa’s mother had her 20-week ultrasound that it was discovered that Tessa would be born with a missing nose.

It’s a bit of a modern touchstone for expectant mothers and fathers to see the first ultrasound photos of their unborn children. It’s a moving, transformative experience for parents-to-be, but for Tatiana Guerra, it was an experience she was unlikely to ever have.
At 30 years old, Guerra was 20 weeks pregnant, so when she went to her doctor to discover how her unborn son, Murilo, was progressing, she had no expectation of actually seeing an image of what her baby looked like. Guerra unfortunately lost her sight when she was 17.
But with the aid of 3D printing, the young mother had a priceless experience. Her doctor surprised her with a 3D printed sculpture of her baby’s face which was taken from ultrasound image data. It allowed her to touch a replica of her tiny boy’s face and in a tactile way, take in how Murilo might look.

Back when 3D printing was just kicking off, there was much talk of a future where people could download new furniture designs, print them, and furnish their living rooms with new pieces whenever they pleased. But despite the fact that 3D printing your own furniture is totally possible now, it hasn’t really caught on for one simple reason – nobody wants to fill their house with a bunch of snap-together plastic furniture.
But the dream of printing your own furnishings isn’t dead yet. A fledgling company by the name of 4 AXYZ has developed a process that allows you to 3D print stuff using high-quality wood, and hopes to use the technology to offer affordable, custom-designed furniture.

Last time we checked in with the 3D printing upstarts over at Formlabs, their Kickstarter was doing splendidly, having over doubled its initial funding target. Well, less than a month later, and with the money still rolling in, the current total stands (at time of writing) at a somewhat impressive $2,182,031 — over 20 times its initial goal. When we heard that the team behind it, along with some all important working printers, rolled into town, how could we resist taking the opportunity to catch up? The venue? London’s 3D print show.
