P1110806It’s time to start making some serious plans for where my beloved and I might travel this year.  Last year, most of my travel was to see my mom and sister a few states away, and most of my husband’s travel was on business. We did manage some other family visits, a kayak trip, and tag-ons to his working trips, but nothing very far from home.

This year, I am hampered a bit by my own lack of income, since I contributed to a lot of fun stuff in the past. (I also may have over-spent a little on Christmas…) I know it’s early in the year, but my husband still has to plan and budget his vacation time, so the sooner we start putting these things on the calendar, the better.

P1110768 (2)First things first – we’ve begun to think about where we’d like to go.  There is the…

“Russia needs its paradise,” Prince Grigory Potemkin, Catherine the Great’s general, wrote in 1782 urging the annexation of Crimea, and no wonder.

The Crimean Peninsula, with its voluptuously curved Black Sea coast of sparkling cliffs, is paradise—with Riviera-grade vistas but without Riviera prices. Balmy with 300 days of sun a year (“It is never winter here,” said the writer Anton Chekhov, who had a dacha near Yalta), the place served as the playground of tsars and Politburo fat cats. Russians practically wept when, after the breakup of the Soviet Union, Crimea was pulled out of the orbit of Russian rule and became part of an independent Ukraine.

The color of the eyes and hair of ancestors dead for hundreds of years can now be revealed from their DNA alone, researchers say.

These findings suggest investigators not only can uncover new details from centuries-old human remains, but can also help identify crime victims, scientists added.

By comparing genomes across thousands of people, researchers identified genetic variations at 24 different points in the human genome that are linked with eye and hair colors, which past studies used to help determine the appearance of people who had died relatively recently. Now a team of researchers from Poland and the Netherlands have developed this system further to reveal the appearance of people long dead.

The first clues appeared in Kenya, Uganda and what is now South Sudan. A British arms researcher surveying ammunition used by government forces and civilian militias in 2006 found Kalashnikov rifle cartridges he had not seen before. The ammunition bore no factory code, suggesting that its manufacturer hoped to avoid detection.

Within two years other researchers were finding identical cartridges circulating through the ethnic violence in Darfur. Similar ammunition then turned up in 2009 in a stadium in Conakry, Guinea, where soldiers had fired on antigovernment protesters, killing more than 150.

Iranian-made cartridges recovered from the northern Ivory Coast, of a type found in several African countries.
