Commemorative events for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. slid seamlessly into celebrations of the swearing-in Monday of the nation’s first black president, with many Americans moved by the reminder of how far the country has come since the 1960s.

“This is the dream that Dr. King talked about in his speech. We see history in the making,” said Joyce Oliver, who observed King Day by visiting the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn., built on the site of the old Lorraine Motel, where King was assassinated in 1968.

In Atlanta, at the 45th annual service for the civil rights leader at the church where he was pastor, those gathered in the sanctuary were invited to stay to watch President Barack Obama’s second inauguration on a big-screen TV.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would have celebrated his 84th birthday this year, and despite his assassination more than four decades ago, his speeches still resonate.

With an ongoing unemployment crisis, a divided government and a society that is far from post-racial, King’s words take on contemporary meaning.

It’s that time of year already. I had an amazing 2012… took a lot of pics, made a lot of new friends, and created a lot of memories. This year I decided to make a top 15 (no, I still couldn’t narrow it down to an official top 10 lol) I hope you guys enjoy! In no particular order……

This Heineken pic (actually the whole set) made my top 15 because it was the start of me really editing my pics. Most people don’t know that I didn’t edit my pics for a long time. I think it made me a better photographer to not have to rely so much on “saving” a pic through editing; instead I was able to take better photos and improve them slightly through editing.

I like this pic because 1) it was one of the first times I got to use my 7D, and…

It’s time to start making some serious plans for where my beloved and I might travel this year.  Last year, most of my travel was to see my mom and sister a few states away, and most of my husband’s travel was on business. We did manage some other family visits, a kayak trip, and tag-ons to his working trips, but nothing very far from home.

This year, I am hampered a bit by my own lack of income, since I contributed to a lot of fun stuff in the past. (I also may have over-spent a little on Christmas…) I know it’s early in the year, but my husband still has to plan and budget his vacation time, so the sooner we start putting these things on the calendar, the better.

First things first – we’ve begun to think about where we’d like to go.  There is the…
