Cecelia Crocker’s body provides her with a constant reminder of the most traumatic event of her life – one that she doesn’t otherwise remember.

At only 4 years old, Crocker was the lone survivor of a 1987 plane crash that killed 154 people aboard and two on the ground near Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

In the new documentary, “Sole Survivor,” Crocker breaks her silence, discussing how the crash of the Phoenix-bound jetliner has affected her.

“I think about the accident every day. It’s kind of hard not to think about it when I look in the mirror,” she said. “I have visual scars. My arms and my legs. And I have a scar on my forehead.”

Crocker, 30, also sports an airplane tattoo on her left wrist.

This is a difficult post. I started it this morning and let the day unfold around Robert Browning Hamilton’s poem. I sensed it would be a day of both pleasure and sorrow.

I resigned from my teaching position. I won’t go back next year. There is nothing calling me back now. My heart has a special place for Stony. It is not a school. It is more, a community where people meet, greet each other, and learn together. That faded and I leave while I still hold the goodness and richness I found there; my narrative  untarnished.

1) Don’t start smoking. Stop smoking if you’ve already started.

 If someone asked you to pick up a habit that increased the risk of all of the following (and would cost you roughly $33-77 dollars a week depending on where you live, brand, etc), would you do so? Here are some of the things that smoking increases the risk of: lung cancer, colon cancer, bladder cancer, esophageal cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, cervical cancer, vascular disease including aortic aneurysms and strokes. It increases the risk of fractures in post menopausal women. It increases the risk of low birth weights in infants. There is an increased chance of developing cataracts. For men in their 30s and 40s, it increases the risk of erectile dysfunction by 50%.

According to the CDC, smoking contributes to 443,000 deaths annually in the U.S.

After 30 years, World War II veteran Jack Wright and his long-time sweetheart Shirlene King have finally married.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the engaged pair wed at the VA West Los Angeles Healthcare Center Tuesday, where 88-year-old Wright is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment for head and neck cancer.

While the ambience of the hallway of the radiation oncology department may not have been ideal, Wright and his 57-year-old bride were surrounded by friends, family and plenty of decorations.

Wright is one of 11 survivors of the 1942 Battle of Guadalcanal.

After the war, Wright settled in Marina Del Rey, Calif., where he lived on his boat and entertained locals with his accordion playing, NBC reports. It was during that time, in 1983, that Wright met King at a hot tub party and pursued her.
