Health officials in Iowa and Nebraska on Tuesday identified prepackaged salad mix as the source of a severe stomach bug that sickened hundreds of people in both states, but federal authorities said it’s not clear whether cyclospora outbreaks elsewhere in the U.S. are also linked to that produce.
Cyclospora is a rare parasite that causes a lengthy gastrointestinal illness, and outbreaks of the illness have been reported in 15 states. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday that it’s not clear whether all of the illnesses are linked to a single source. The outbreak has sickened at least 145 residents in Iowa and 78 in Nebraska.
Nebraska officials said the salad mix in question included iceberg and romaine lettuce, along with red cabbage and carrots, which came through national distribution chains. They did not identify specific brands. A Nebraska health department…

RECEIVED THIS PIECE ON BLACK US HISTORY IN AN EMAIL FROM A FRIEND
“Oil Made Pickaninny Rich – Oklahoma Girl With $15,000 A Month Gets Many Proposals – Four White Men in Germany Want to Marry the Negro Child That They Might Share Her Fortune.” This headline, which appeared in The Kansas City Star on January 15, 1914, was just the first of many newspaper and magazine headlines during the next decade about Sarah Rector, the richest black child known to the world in that era.
In September, 1913, The Kansas City Star reported: “Millions to a Negro Girl – Sarah Rector, 10-Year Old, Has Income of $300 A Day From Oil,” and The Savannah Tribune ran: “Oil Well Produces Neat Income – Negro Girl’s $112,000 A Year.”
In 1914 and 1915, the Salt Lake Telegram, The Oregonian and American Magazine profiled the “bewildered little ten year-old girl” and told…

Her name was Sarah Rector. She was a young black girl born in Indian Territory on March 3, 1902. Her parents were Joseph and Rose Rector, all of Taft, Indian Territory. Her story is similar to that of Danny Tucker another black child born in Indian Territory. He, like Sarah had a humble beginning, and he, like Sarah would make headlines for sudden wealth acquired by oil rich land.

Cumulus Dropping Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity: Report

.
Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are set to be dropped from the second-biggest radio network in the country, Politico reported Sunday night.
Cumulus, which runs about 40 stations across the country, is prepared to part ways with the broadcasters over the high cost of distributing their shows, the report said. Limbaugh and Hannity–who are the top two most highly-rated talk show hosts in America–are syndicated by Premiere, which is owned by Cumulus rival Clear Channel. If the plan comes to fruition, it would mark the culmination of a series of escalating skirmishes between the company and the broadcasters–especially Limbaugh.
In May, the New York Daily News reported that Limbaugh was set to leave Cumulus himself, after CEO Lew Dickey repeatedly accused him of contributing to the company’s financial losses due to his incendiary remarks about Sandra Fluke.

The nickel tour
July 28, 2013
Here are a few things about cars you may
not have seen before. And even if you
have seen them, they are fun to watch again.
Tim Allen is known for his ‘Home
Improvement’ show, but here is a look at
his car collection.
Since we never get tired of looking at
rat rods we present Satan’s Rat-Rod as
told by the folks at Big Muscle.
Here is video of the 401k Charity Show
For our automotive educational video of
the week we present “How not to run a
dyno”.
This one isn’t about cars, driving,
racing, or burning rubber. It is just a
short clip of Larry the Cable Guy
speaking his mind about gays and freedom.
And for music we have Billy Joel and
one of our favorites.
That concludes the nickel tour of our
coverage of things automotive and more.
Comments are always welcome.

Visual Description: Where we’ll (or at least the rich people will) get our (their) potable water from in the future, after the Keystone XL pipeline and all the hydro-fracking makes our own water undrinkable.
VETEN = EVENT, THENT = TENTH, KAEEUR = EUREKA, PAMELI = IMPALE — Giving us: NTTHURIAE
Clue/Question: The astronauts on Mars dug for ice in an attempt to . . .
Answer: UNEARTH IT
(I liked it! A lot! Great clue word jumbling. Hoyt really outdid himself today. I loved “eureka”. I actually had to think a bit on “tenth”, and “impale” has always been a fan favorite. Also, the answer letter layout was perfect! Maybe the best I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t even hint at the answer. And, you can never say enough about the Jeff Knurek cartoons! Straight out of…

.
An Oklahoma man is accused of holding his girlfriend captive and torturing her with an electric drill.
Clyde Harshaw, 42, was arrested charged with kidnapping, assault and battery, maiming and rape by instrumentation, the McAlester News-Capital reported.
Harshaw’s girlfriend said that in early July, Harshaw drugged her and tied her up with rope and extension cords at his McAlester home.
He then allegedly held her captive for five days, beating her with a hammer, cutting her with a knife, pouring acid on her wounds and pulling her hair out using a drill, according to News 9.
“She alleged that he had taken a drill, with a bit still on it, put it at her head and turn the drill on. The hair would catch up in the drill and pull patches of hair out,” Sheriff Joel Kerns told the station.
