Shifts in climate are strongly linked to increases in violence around the world, a study suggests.

US scientists found that even small changes in temperature or rainfall correlated with a rise in assaults, rapes and murders, as well as group conflicts and war.

The team says with the current projected levels of climate change, the world is likely to become a more violent place.

The study is published in Science.

Marshall Burke, from the University of California, Berkeley, said: “This is a relationship we observe across time and across all major continents around the world. The relationship we find between these climate variables and conflict outcomes are often very large.”

The researchers looked at 60 studies from around the world, with data spanning hundreds of years.

Supermax is the name used to describe “control-unit” prisons, or units within prisons, which represent the most secure levels of custody in the prison systems of certain countries. The objective is to provide long term, segregated housing for inmates classified as the highest security risks in the prison system – the “worst of the worst” criminals and those who pose a threat to national and international security.

History

The United States Penitentiary Alcatraz Island, opened in the 1930s, has been considered a prototype and early standard for a supermax prison.

An early form of supermax-style prison unit appeared in Australia in 1975, when “Katingal” was built inside the Long Bay Correctional Centre in Sydney. Dubbed the “electronic zoo” by inmates, Katingal was a super-maximum security prison block with 40 prison cells having electronically operated doors, surveillance cameras, and no windows. It was closed down two…

This video is called Paul Sereno talks about Eodromaeus the “Dawn Runner”.

From the University of Chicago in the USA:

New predator ‘dawn runner’ discovered in early dinosaur graveyard

A team of paleontologists and geologists from Argentina and the United States on Jan. 13 announced the discovery of a lanky dinosaur that roamed South America in search of prey as the age of dinosaurs began, approximately 230 million years ago.

Sporting a long neck and tail and weighing only 10 to 15 pounds, the new dinosaur has been named Eodromaeus, the “dawn runner.”

“It really is the earliest look we have at the long line of meat eaters that would ultimately culminate in Tyrannosaurus rex near the end of the dinosaur era,” said Paul Sereno, University of Chicago paleontologist and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. “Who could foretell what evolution had in store for the descendants of this pint-sized…

ARTWALK this summer was a wonderful success.

Picture That was joined by many artists and businesses in downtown Stamford’s first ARTWALK, a two-day outdoor exhibition where we took the world of art to the streets.

Local residents  showed up to support ARTWALK, which spoke of inclusivity and community.  And we also saw people from neighboring states and towns.

We’d like to thank all the businesses, artists and spectators who helped us to make ARTWALK the success that it was.

Do you SMELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL what The Craftsman is cooking?????

We could not wait to make it back to The Craftsman for some more of their Charcuterie and to see what was on the menu this week.  I’m fighting a cold, but thankfully my taste buds still let me enjoy the amazingness that was served to me.  Our waitress, Kelly, greeted us at the door and recognized us from our first visit!! How awesome is that?

Tonight’s Charcuterie: pork rillette, pork terrine, duck gizzards, duck liver pate’, duck sausage, pickled veggies and amazing olive bread.  The makers of this delicious meat assortment honestly deserve a metal.

They say to feed a cold, so I ordered the Grass Fed Hangar Steak with fries and Bearnaise Sauce.  This is exactly what the doctor ordered.  The steak was meaty, cooked exactly the way I love it and very lean.  Did I mention that…

Thousands of years after their owners’ mouths stopped moving forever, the teeth of Egyptian mummies are telling scientists details about their civilization.

After analyzing the oxygen isotope levels in teeth recovered from the mummies, researchers at the Université de Lyon in France were able to determine that the ancient Egyptians endured an extensive period of drought.

Scientists have long attempted to link the Egyptian civilization’s rise and fall to changes in climate, but they’ve been stymied by gaps in Nile River sediment records and historical accounts.

The mummy research, carried out over several years, involved drilling tiny holes in the teeth and bones of mummies housed at the Musée des Confluences de Lyon in France. Bone and enamel samples were then tested for two oxygen isotopes.

Changes in the isotopic ratios showed researchers that, for a time, the region was subjected to extremely dry…

* Obama’s 2008 opponent may be key to White House success

* Draws praise from Democrats, fire from right-wingers

* 76-year-old maverick “back in his groove”

Republican U.S. Senator John McCain accidentally walked in on President Barack Obama this week when he was addressing a Democrats-only meeting of senators.

“Come on in, John,” Obama shouted.

A red-faced McCain turned around and headed out to chuckles and then applause from the Democrats. “My mistake,” McCain said.

To the far-right in the Republican Party, there is no mistake about it. In a party that generally brooks no compromise with Obama, McCain is the compromiser-in-chief. He’s negotiating with the White House.

And he’s in-their-face about it, having recently described as “wacko birds” two of the right’s most uncompromising heroes, Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul.

A recent article in the conservative National Review described McCain as “Obama’s…

It’s probably the most overused quote in tech writing… which sucks, because I’d really like to use it to describe how I feel about the Chromecast.

The Chromecast is deceptively simple: you plug it into your TV, then stream video and music to it from apps running on your iPhone, Android device, or laptop. The Chromecast itself has no remote; whatever device you’re streaming from is the remote. The Chromecast has next to no user interface of its own, either; it’s got a single screen that shows the time and whether or not it’s connected to your WiFi that appears when nothing is being streamed, but again, the device you’re streaming from largely acts as the interface. The Chromecast is a wireless portal to your TV, and doesn’t try to be anything more.

You think losing a $10 bill is bad? Trying losing $33 billion, and with it your ranking among the world’s richest men.

That’s what’s happened to Brazilian oil tycoon Eike Batista, who last year was quite literally on top of the world. Life was good, he was eighth richest man on the planet, and once he even vowed to overtake Mexico’s Carlos Slim as the planet’s richest man.

It didn’t last, and Batista has since watched his $34 billion net worth plummet some $33 billion over 16 months or so, according to Bloomberg. The big problem? His oil conglomerate, OGX Petroleo & Gas Participacoes SA, lost 90 percent of its value over the last year, leaving Batista with a relatively paltry $200 million when including debts he owes to investors.
