The women plastered around today’s billboards and magazine ads adhere to a very particular standard of beauty, one that, in real life, is nearly impossible to achieve. From size 0 waists to flawless complexion, contemporary “ideal” women resemble plastic mannequins more than the ladies you’d encounter, you know, in real life. Here to drive the point home is Lauren Wade, with the help of some of art history’s most beloved nudes.

Federal health officials recommended Wednesday that hundreds of thousands of Americans at risk for AIDS take a daily pill that has been shown to prevent infection with the virus that causes it.

If broadly followed, the advice could transform AIDS prevention in the United States — from reliance on condoms, which are effective but unpopular with many men, to a regimen that relies on an antiretroviral drug.

It would mean a 50-fold increase in the number of prescriptions for the drug, Truvada — to 500,000 a year from fewer than 10,000. The drug costs $13,000 a year, and most insurers already cover it.

Skywatchers may be in for an unexpected delight this week.

On May 23 and 24, the Earth will pass through a stream of debris left behind by a comet called Comet 209P/LINEAR nearly 200 years ago. The event will likely deliver a brilliant display, which will be the first of its kind. Astronomers have preemptively dubbed it the Camelopardalid meteor shower.

For the first time, the Camelopardalids will radiate a faint constellation in the northern hemisphere called Camelopardalis. Estimates put the shower’s peak in the overnight hours between Friday and Saturday. For observers in the Eastern Time Zone, the prime time to see the shooting stars will be from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. EDT on May 24.

Ever wish you could jump in a time machine and travel back to the age of dinosaurs? What were terrifying prehistoric beasts like megalodon and T. rex really like? And what happened when these creatures battled each other to the death?

While we may not have time machines, a Canadian paleoartist, Julius Csotonyi, provides us with the next best thing. Check out a selection of illustrations from his new book, “The Paleoart of Julius Csotonyi,” below.

“I became interested in drawing dinosaurs as a kid, as do many kids. I never grew out of my ‘dinophile’ phase,” Csotonyi wrote in an artist’s statement on his website. “Dinosaurs are members of a world that is alien to us, and my fascination with the unexplored and unknown led me to both my interest in illustrating dinosaurs and my current career path in science.”
