The Tonic of Wildness

Jess Gruber's avatarMoon Dancer Diaries

We need the tonic of wildness…At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.

Sometimes the best gift is the gift of not having to do chores. Of course, if no one mows the lawn, cleans the gutters or vacuums the living room, who will? Your robot, of course.

Everyone knows about the Roomba, which set the standard for vacuuming robots years ago, but fewer have heard of the many other home-maintenance bots that are available to the progressive (and lazy) homeowner.

The Environmental Protection Agency unveiled new standards on Monday, calling for a 30 percent cut in carbon emissions from power plants by 2030.

The regulations are the first of their kind for the fleet of existing power plants, which currently produce 39 percent of U.S. emissions. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy described the rules in further detail at a press conference Monday morning.

McCarthy emphasized the problems stemming from carbon pollution, which “supercharges risks not just to our health — but to our communities, our economy, and our way of life.”

Be the change you want to see in the world

I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.
–Mother Teresa

Besides generating papers to fulfil academic/professional aspirations, most researchers hope that with time, their papers would gain recognition and that findings would someday have real life implications on the world.

Closely intertwined with the concept of beneficence, it can be difficult for researchers to make that difference amidst the hundreds and thousands of journal articles published each year.

So the question is what now?
How can research feed into policies and support positive change?

These question remains pivotal in the translation of research into action and attempts to answer it often rest on understanding the roles and interactions between the various actors who govern the research to implementation process.

Revolving around the principle that research provides evidence for implementation and practice; many contend that research in action can save lives, reduce poverty and…

12 Unfortunate Restaurant Truths That Will Make You Think Twice About Eating Out

We all love going out to eat. Whether restaurant outings are an everyday event or only for special occasions, sitting down and being served (hopefully) delicious food and drinks is one of society’s great pastimes. But if you’ve ever felt duped by a menu or ripped off when the check comes, that’s because you probably have been.

Restaurants are businesses and their goal is, quite obviously, to make money. How much they make can vary greatly, depending on a number of different factors. As Amanda Cohen, the chef at New York City’s Dirt Candy explained to Eater, “The price of ingredients barely enters into [the cost of a dish]. … You’re not paying $21 for your broccoli dogs, you’re paying $21 to rent your table; I just trick you into thinking you’re paying for the broccoli dogs because that’s the accepted convention…

Back When We Were Negroes

I thought you might find this article interesting.

!!!!Negroes1There was a time until the early 1960s when the terms to describe those of African decent, like me — African-American or Black or Afro-American — were almost unheard of. I remember a distinct conversation with a friend discussing descriptive terms for ourselves in 1963 or ’64. The term “black” was just coming into vogue and he didn’t like it one bit. “Call me a Negro,” he said, “but don’t call me black.”
Now, the word “Negro” (publications used a lower case “n”) has almost become a pejorative, so I was a little surprised when my pastor, the Rev. Willie Reid, used it during Thursday’s revival. “Back when we were Negroes,” he said, and listed several things that were different about black life in America back then.
That got me to thinking.
Back when we were Negroes in the 1950s, “only 9…
