A beautiful, sexy, singer/raper named Noni, who is played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, hates her life because she is pushed around and exploited as a sex symbol instead of using her singing talent to pursue the music she really has a passion for singing.  Minnie Driver plays Macy Jean, Noni’s  over bearing mother who goes along with any and everything suggested for her daughter’s success, even if it’s not what’s best for her.  Depression sets in and Noni  is on the verge of suicide.  Enters Kaz, played by Nate Parker,  who proves to be her knight in shining armor.  Watching Noni’s transformation into the person she ultimately becomes, makes for an interesting movie.  I’ve never seen Gugu Mbatha-Raw in a role like this.  She really made me believe she was the character she portrayed.  Danny Glover plays Captain Nicol,  Kaz’ father who is also a bit over bearing.  These 2 parents (Macy and Captain Nicol) can be considered control freaks…

In the boldest move on immigration policy of his presidency, President Barack Obama announced plans Thursday evening to dramatically increase deportation relief for an estimated 4.4 million undocumented immigrants. The executive action will protect parents, as well as those who came to the U.S. as children and others with long-standing ties to the country, from being forced out of their homes.

Obama defended the move in a primetime address, saying “the real amnesty [is] leaving this broken system the way it is.”

People who carry errors in a single gene could be protected against heart attacks and high cholesterol, American research suggests.

The New England Journal of Medicine study reveals one in every 650 people could have genetic faults that halve the chance of suffering heart attacks.

Drugs that work on this gene pathway already exist and researchers hope this sheds light on their effectiveness.

Scientists say their findings may pave the way for improved therapies.

The spacecraft that landed on a comet performed two tricky maneuvers Friday, by drilling into the rocky surface and rotating itself to catch more sunlight.

Both operations carried considerable risks, because they could have toppled the probe or pushed it out into the void. But without them the Philae lander that scored a historic first by touching down on a comet Wednesday risked skipping a key scientific experiment and running out of battery.

Scientists at the European Space Agency said the maneuvers appeared to have worked.

 Police in Winnipeg, Canada say that the bodies of several infants were found in a U-Haul storage locker on Monday night.

CBC News first reported the “gruesome scene,” where six bodies were discovered in various states of decomposition. An employee at the facility originally called police after the remains caught his or her attention. It wasn’t immediately clear how long the bodies had been in the locker, but police told reporters that a woman who was renting the locker has been interviewed.

UPDATE: The Canadian Press reports that Andrea Giesbrecht, 40, was arrested and charged with concealing the bodies. Police say the babies may have been newborns. There are no homicide charges planned at the moment.

“Shangri-La” – just the mere mention of this name would conjure images in my mind of a mystical city located in some highly inaccessible ranges of the Himalayas and filled with secrets, known to but a few chosen ones. Though in realty, it is located in the northwest Yunnan Province, in the Dechen Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Called Zhongdian in Mandarin and Galthang in Tibetan, Shangri-La is the name given by the Chinese tourism authorities to this city after James Hilton’s novel – The Lost Horizon. Though I haven’t read the book, I recently got a chance to visit this city and drive around its surrounding countryside. This area provides a quick glimpse into the Tibetan life and culture, and I am sharing these via a photo essay with you today –

1. Stunning Vistas – Shangri-La is at an average height of around 3,000 – 4,000 m and has beautiful mountain ranges…

1) Don’t put anything valuable in the front pocket of your backpack, or in any pockets of your clothing.

2) Be weary of anyone who approaches you asking for directions. As local as you’ve convinced yourself that you look, you’re obviously a tourist and nobody should need your help. Pickpockets might also approach you in a language other than the local one to make themselves seem like innocent and confused tourists. It’s fine to give directions, but never let anyone obscure your view of your valuables (see #3). If you’re holding your phone or wallet when they approach you, hold on TIGHT and don’t put it away in an easy-access pocket without thinking. If they ask you to take out your phone to show them a map, your phone doesn’t have any battery left.
