BLACK OR WHITE (2014) – My rating: 8.5/10

Black or White is a very well written movie about a mixed race child who suddenly loses her Caucasian grandmother to a car accident. The child, Eloise Anderson (Jillian Estell) also lost her mother, who is also Causasian, when she died during child birth. Since she has always lived with her grandparents, Eloise continued to live with her grandfather, Elliot Anderson (Kevin Costner), who is a lawyer but has a very bad drinking problem. Eloise’s father Reggie Davis (André Holland) is Black and a former drug abuser who continues to dibble and dabble in Crack Cocaine. Reggie has no connection or contact with his daughter but is trying to get clean. He’s has no money but claims to have a job. His character appears to be weak and low in self esteem. Hundreds of graves have been vandalized at a Jewish cemetery in eastern France, in what the president called an “odious and barbaric” anti-Semitic act against French values.
The vandalism comes at a time of growing insecurity among French Jews and amid general religious tensions in Europe, after Islamic radicals attacked a kosher market and a satirical newspaper in Paris last month and similar attacks hit Denmark this weekend.
French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said in a statement Sunday that a criminal investigation team is at the damaged cemetery in Sarre-Union, near the German border, and authorities will do “everything” to pursue the vandals.

INHERENT VICE (2014) – My rating: 5.5/10

Perhaps Inherent Vice is over my head or maybe it was just not my cup of tea or maybe it’s just a bad movie. I found it extremely hard to stay focused on it because the movie is all over the place with strange conversation. Why it won or was nominated for anything is more than I can comprehend.
The movie takes place in the 70s and stars a huge cast. Inherent Vice starts out with Shasta Fay Hepworth (Katherine Waterspoon) visiting her x-boyfriend, Larry “Doc” Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) at his run down cabin. Doc is a private investigator, a hippy and a serious drug abuser. Shasta provides Doc with a new case involving her current rich boyfriend, Mickey Wolfmann (Eric Roberts). It seems Mickey’s wife and her lover plan to abduct him, then commit him to an insane asylum. Doc’s assignment is to stop this from happening.

A community is rallying around a Toronto family after their 3-year-old boy — who wandered into the cold Thursday night, wearing nothing but a diaper, T-shirt and boots — was found dead near his home.
Elijah Marsh, 3, was pronounced dead shortly after authorities located him. He was reportedly huddled up to an air conditioner unit just 1,000 feet away from where he got locked out of his family’s apartment. He may have spent up to six hours in frigid temperatures.
Surveillance footage shows a boy who looks like Elijah leaving the home at about 4:05 a.m.

Once you have kids and fall into the trap of working from home life becomes a whirlpool. Wait a minute, I just looked it up and the better word for life at home with the kids, food and work is maelstrom. Furniture, blender, kitchen, wailing children, cranky spouse, laptop all swirl like planets in a constellation doing their best to undo an orderly life.
I miss my association with a big organisation. The automatic recognition of you being somebody once you are an important cog in the corporate machine. No Matter, forward soldiers regardless.
I asked my mind what to do about it. It said, ‘ignore.’ Pretend you are dead. It works. I have killed myself existentially. I am but a body lying there the rest of me is floating above deaf to mayhem and disobedience from my kids. My third eye will only intervene…

Their whispering voice was suppressed by the public announcement system of the train when it reached the Sovabazar station. Many passengers disembarked and many more embarked at the station. In a few seconds time the train started moving again.
