Turkish authorities have charged an ex-boyfriend in the shooting of a young female talent show singer in southeast Turkey — the latest high-profile attack on a woman in Turkey, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency.

Mutlu Kaya, a 19-year-old Kurd, was hospitalized in a critical condition after being shot in the head through a window of her house early Monday. The ex-boyfriend, identified as Veysel E., was detained along with two others, who were later released. He is charged with attempted murder.

Kaya gained national notice in Turkey in a popular song contest and had been mentored by Sibel Can, a well-known Turkish folk singer.

            The first time I worked B.B. King, I almost didn’t work B.B King. He couldn’t find the theater.

Sue Weill of the Walker Art Center had booked him for  two performances, 7 and 10 PM, at the Guthrie Theater. Naturally both shows were sell-outs.

King wasn’t there for sound check; but that was no big deal, his group had played together for a long time and they knew what B.B. wanted. But as it grew closer to show time, King’s absence became something to worry about. Mad Max: Fury Road turned out to be an excellent movie. It’s been 30 years since the last Mad Max film (Beyond Thunderdome). Fury Road is the fourth film of the Mad Max franchise. It takes place in post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland. Max Rockatansky (formerly played by Mel Gibson) is now played by British actor, Tom Hardy. Water, food and gasoline is scarce but cults and gangs are not. Charlize Theron plays Imperator Furiosa who drives an armored tanker truck and collects gasoline among other things. Her goal is to get back to her childhood home where she was abducted as a child. This time she is bringing with her, the wives of the current cult leader, Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and his cronies who are also breeders of warlords and hoarders of water. When this 99-pound loggerhead sea turtle was hit by a boat propeller, his jaw–as well as his life–was left hanging by a thread.

A sea turtle’s beak is instrumental in hunting for food. Without it, he would have been unable to feed himself and probably starved to death.

Luckily, the turtle was pulled out of the water before it was too late. He was transported to a rescue center in Turkey where 3D-printing company BTech Innovation scanned his injured head and created a prosthetic beak made of medical grade titanium.

While Mr. Turner was nominated for various awards, it was not an easy watch.  It’s a British, German and French biographical piece written about a well respected but not so well liked painter named Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851).  Turner (Timothy Spall) started painting as a young boy who had a love and passion for his father and his art.  Despite a couple of lovers, Mr. Turner was never married.  He did have two unacknowledged daughters by his first love, Sarah Danby (Ruth Sheen).   Hannah Danby (Dorothy Atkinson) was Mr. Turner’s devoted housekeeper for 40 years, whom he exploited sexually.  Hannah suffered from Psoriasis as well as a one sided love affair, as Turner never returned her feelings.  There are many characters in this film from Mr. Turner’s Society friends to the many visitors who came to view his paintings.  In my opinion,  the film was slow and the…

For the Kansas-based company, that means wearables, wearables, wearables. From golfers to boating enthusiasts, the company’s got a device for just about every wrist attached to someone looking to wear their hobbies on their sleeve.

Take the Vivofit 2, which we reviewed a few weeks back. The fitness band is about as simple and straightforward as a wearable can be. In fact, it’s almost difficult to believe that the device is the product of the same company that made the Fenix 3, which is, simply put, a wrist-worn tank.

I started this website because everybody I know sucks at asking me about my travels . . .

And I have a suspicion it is not because I have a mundane and uncultured group of friends and family. After years of traveling, and just as many hoping to finally feel heard when speaking about my stints on the road, I have found that my stories have become a series of short, humorous anecdotes or grave warnings about the harrows of vagrancy. Either way they are short, simple, and compact. They’re the elevator pitches of travel accounts. Things anyone can listen to, even those who haven’t put in extensive time living out of a pack.

And I don’t think it’s just them, I find myself not being the best audience when other folks attempt to tell me about their latest trip as well. I think that we all kind of suck…

The Water Diviner, directed by Russell Crowe,  is an excellent movie.  I didn’t think I would like it, boy was I wrong.  The movie opens in 1919 right after WWI, with a farmer named Joshua Connor (Russell Crowe), using a diviner to find water on his property.  When he does, he digs and builds a rather sophisticated well.    Joshua has three sons, Arthur (Ryan Corr), Edward (James Fraser), and Henry (Ben O’Toole) who all served with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at the Battle of Gallipoli five years prior to the opening scene of the movie and are now presumed dead. Joshua’s wife, Eliza (Jacqueline McKenzie), is unable to come to grips with their loss and blames Joshua for not going out and finding the boys.  Soon after, Eliza committed suicide by drowning. Ex Machina is not for everyone.  It’s strictly dedicated to Artificial Intelligence, genius level minds and the art of manipulation.  I found the movie a little slow but brilliant.  Up until a point, I was able to predict a lot of it but when that point arrived, I was just as surprised as the next person to discover what the writer had in mind.  A genius software developer and CEO of the biggest internet company on the planet also lives on a several hundred acre private mountain retreat/home.  Caleb Smith (Domhall Glesson), a young computer programmer has won the company lottery to spend a week at the CEO’s private mountain retreat/home.  Access to the above ground portion of the retreat was only granted within a designated area by helicopter, then you are instructed to walk the rest of the way to the only set of units that would allow you…
