This Star Wars is a good one. I loved seeing some of the old gang and I loved that there will be more Star Wars on the horizon, Scheduled for 2017. As much as I liked The Force Awakens, I didn’t like it as much as some of the past Star Wars episodes. About 30 years after the second Death Star was destroyed in Return on the Jedi, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) who didn’t make an appearance until the very end of this movie and is also the last Jedi, has disappeared. The First Order is looking to eliminate Luke and the Republic but Luke’s twin sister, Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) is opposing the First Order while searching for Luke to get his help before they are destroyed. Several cities are going even higher. Seattle is setting a sliding hourly minimum between $10.50 and $13 on Jan. 1, and Los Angeles and San Francisco are enacting similar increases in July, en route to $15 an hour phased in over six years.

Backers say a higher minimum wage helps combat poverty, but opponents worry about the potential impact on employment and company profits.

In 2014, a Democratic-backed congressional proposal to increase the federal minimum wage for the first time since 2009 to $10.10 stalled, as have subsequent efforts by President Barack Obama. More recent proposals by some lawmakers call for a federal minimum wage of up to $15 an hour.

Natalie Cole, the American singer who overcame battles with substance abuse and the long shadow of her famous father to earn worldwide success of her own, has died. She was 65.

Cole died Thursday night at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles “due to complications from ongoing health issues,” according to a statement from her family.

“It is with heavy hearts that we bring to you all the news of our Mother and sister’s passing. Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived … with dignity, strength and honor,” her sisters, Timolin and Casey Cole, and son, Robert Yancy, said in the statement. “Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain unforgettable in our hearts forever.”

One of the fastest-moving fields in cancer research, epigenetics is the study of changes that influence how DNA does its job. Some of these alterations have been shown to cause cancer. Unlike most existing cancer drugs, which work by destroying cancer cells, therapies that target epigenetic changes have the potential to reprogram the diseased cells and set them on a path back toward normal growth and development.

Physician-scientists like myself and others at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) are exploring a number of new drugs that interfere with certain epigenetic processes. If such drugs prove to be safe and effective in clinical trials, they may eventually offer a groundbreaking approach to cancer treatment.

Tyson, who hosts “StarTalk” on the National Geographic Channel and serves as director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, has already expressed his preference for the USS Enterprise from “Star Trek” over the Millennium Falcon.

On Monday, after “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” destroyed box office records, he used the force of scientific knowledge to break down some of the movies questionable decisions. (Minor spoilers ahead).

Secret in their Eyes is a suspenseful “how can we convict this totally guilty guy” thriller.  It’s a little slow at times but keeps your interest level high most of the movie. Taking place in Los Angeles, the film focuses on four main characters, Jess Cobb’s, (Julia Roberts) a District Attorney’s Investigator working on a case along side FBI Counter Terrorism Investigator, Ray Karsten (Chiwetel Ejiofor),  newly hired Assistant DA, Claire Slone (Nicole Kidman) and the criminal, Marzin, (Joe Cole) who is hard to arrest or convict given his status to the affiliated case.  We learn early on that Caroline, Jess’ daughter is found raped, brutally murdered and bleached inside and out.  The problem with this plot is I find it hard to believe.  I think anyone would find it hard to believe cops, corrupt or not, would cover up a fellow officer’s tragedy with nothing in return.
