The first Tarzan movie was a silent film called “Tarzan of the Apes” and was released in 1918. The ninth was called “Tarzan the Ape Man” and was a motion picture released in 1932. All in all, there were 57 Tarzan movies made between 1918 and 2013. Several books were written, starting in 1912, by Edgar Rice Burroughs, who created the character. There were also many Tarzan television series through the years. Having said that, it seems Tarzan continues to be a fascinating subject that never grows old and never stops making money at the box office. Wow, what a surprise! This movie will go down as a masterpiece. Part truth and part fiction, it’s filled with hate but rich in history of the shameful past of this country’s treatment of Blacks and determination to keep slaves as indentured servants for as long as they live. Free State of Jones is inspired by the life of Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey) a poor farmer who lead a rebellion against the Confederacy in Jones County, Mississippi during the Civil War. Jones’ army consisted of deserters and run away slaves creating a mixed race community. Included in that community, was Rachel (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) a former slave who later became Newton’s wife and Moses Washington (Mahershala Ali) an escaped slave who became a major player in Knight’s rebellion. Summer of 2016 is not shaping up to be very good for adult movie goers. The children are having a blast. Movies like Finding Dory, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Zootopia, Alice through the Looking Glass and the Angry Birds Movie are making a killing at the box office with pretty good ratings. With a few exceptions, the adult movies like Hail Caesar, Money Monster, The Nice Guys, Neighbors 2, and Independence Day: Resurgence have been total disappointments. You know it’s summer when the movie fill ins start. Central Intelligence is one of them. While it’s not a bad movie, it’s not a great one either. It is funny but so unbelievable that it’s stupid. Grant you, it’s not predictable but that’s because it not believable. You wouldn’t be able to figure out the plot because there’s nothing realistic about it. The good news is the chemistry between Hart and Johnson is better than most comedy teams I’ve seen. They seem to have a genuine like for each other, which makes for a great comedy team. I found Central Intelligence to be entertaining even though it bordered on slap stick, which I’m not a fan of.
I thought the first “Now You See Me” was clever and it was but the sequel has more substance and is even more entertaining. It’s just as clever plus they explain how most of the tricks are done, which is nice to know. The same crew is back with the exception of Isla Fisher who played Henley Reeves, the only female member of the Four Horsemen. Isla was replaced by Lizzy Caplan as Lula May, the new Illusionist. The rest of the crew consists of Woody Harrelson as Merritt McKinney, Jesse Eisenberg as J. Daniel Atlas and Dave Franco as Jack Wilder. Also back is their handler, FBI agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) and Morgan Freeman as Thaddeus Bradley, an ex-magician who, for thirty years, has made money by revealing the secrets behind other magicians’ tricks. X-Men: Apocalypse may very well be the best of the X-men series I’ve seen. What made it so good was the clear, simple story that was still full of action, adventure and special effects galore. I loved that the story wasn’t over the top, full of a million sub plots and tons of flash backs that you couldn’t put together until the end. Instead, the story flowed and was kept simple and focused mostly on the current issues. Of course that makes the film a little more predictable but you won’t have a king size headache when you leave the theater. The plot is nothing I haven’t heard before. Barbershop: The Next Cut is a comedy with a profound message. A third sequel to the barbershop series tries to send a message about the senseless killings of our youth in our communities who are too often hit by stray bullets intended for those involved in gang activity. Children are being killed so often, this Chicago neighborhood is trying to come up with a solution that can be implemented quick and easy. Calvin Palmer (Ice Cube) and his wife Jennifer Palmer (Jazsmin Lewis) are watching their son Jalen (Michael Rainey, Jr.) change from a sweet loving kid to a hard headed rebellious type that is staring to head down the wrong path. In my opinion, Civil War is the best Captain America to date. I absolutely love this movie. It even addressed the over the top destruction I often talk about in these types of movies. In fact, you might say destruction, carelessness, and thoughtlessness is the theme of Civil War. It also addressed the diversity issue giving Blacks better roles although these types of movies are never nominated for Oscars. This Captain America sequel starts out with
