Most of them are handwritten — on pages ripped out of notebooks, work stationary and handmade postcards. Sometimes, they’re no more than a few words scrawled on a Post-It note, stuck on a check or some cash.

Doris-Pierce, Warren’s constituency outreach director, sorts through the notes, dividing them into piles. Some are strategy suggestions that get passed onto the policy team; others are personal stories or words of encouragement; some write to ask how they can volunteer with Warren’s presidential campaign. Many of them end up on the “Letters to EW” wall in the middle of the senator’s sprawling headquarters.

President Donald Trump froze at the controls.
After ordering up airstrikes on Iran in retaliation for the downing of an unmanned American drone, the commander in chief balked at the last minute Thursday.
“Nothing was green-lighted until the very end because things change,” the president told NBC’s Chuck Todd in an interview that will air on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, pointing to the expected casualty count as his reason.
“I thought about it for a second and I said, you know what, they shot down an unmanned drone, plane, whatever you want to call it, and here we are sitting with 150 dead people that would have taken place probably within a half an hour after I said go ahead. … I didn’t think it was proportionate.”

It’s a crisis that President Donald Trump predictably provoked by pulling out of the Iranian nuclear deal just over a year ago — with no real Plan B beyond imposing ever-tougher sanctions on the Iranian regime.

But the story gets more complicated, because in the last few weeks, Trump has sent mixed messages regarding his true intentions.
.
Last week, he said he wanted to talk to the Iranians (which they have rejected). Yet, in contrast, in May, Trump tweeted that a war with Iran would be “the official end of Iran.” And after the US drone was shot down on Thursday, he tweeted, “Iran made a very big mistake!”
On Thursday, Trump approved strikes against Iranian targets such as some missile batteries and radars. He then abruptly called off the strikes.

Iraq War veteran Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., didn’t mince words about President Trump’s redirection of Pentagon resources to a U.S.-Mexico border wall after Congress declined to fund it.
“If anything, he’s cut funding for our military readiness. He’s stealing from the military,” Sen. Duckworth told the Yahoo News show “Through Her Eyes.”
“He’s sending troops to the border to sit around in the desert,” she added. “Thousands of miles from where these migrants are, instead of going to training. He’s also now been supportive of deporting veterans who serve who are green card holders.”
She also took Trump to task for his recent comments to British broadcaster Piers Morgan about military service.
“It would’ve been an honor to serve,” President Trump told Morgan when asked about his lack of military service. “But I think I make up for it right now … because we’re rebuilding our military at a level that it’s never seen before.”

Unless you have been away or tuned out, you likely know that Lil Nas X’s song, “Old Town Road” (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus), has been the No. 1 song on the Billboard’s “Hot 100” chart for 11 straight weeks.
Lil Nas X, 20, born Montero Lamar Hill, is a self-made rapper from Atlanta who created the chart-topper with a country-style song paired with a 57-year-old White country music star.
It has a catchy beat and hook and has been turned into scores of videos by TikTokers and YouTubers. Lil Nas X also recently showed up for a surprise performance for Cleveland fifth graders, who sang the song in their talent show and their teacher posted it to Twitter.
Of course, there are naysayers and resistance, claiming appropriation, after the jeans brand Wrangler debuted its Wrangler Lil Nas X Collection. Some country fans are calling for a boycott of the jeans since the partnership, a move his fans criticize as racist.

Iran shot down an unmanned U.S. surveillance drone on Thursday morning in the most direct escalation of the ongoing crisis between Washington and the Islamic republic. The prospect of U.S. military conflict with the second-largest country in the Middle East has alarmed leaders and defense officials worldwide — but Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton may be getting just what they want.
Relations between the U.S. and Iran have steadily deteriorated since President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 multilateral Iranian nuclear deal that agreed to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions in exchange for economic relief. The Trump administration instead implemented a maximum pressure campaign of sanctions and aggressive military posturing, but instead of forcing Iran to capitulate to American demands, the strategy has increased the possibility of military conflict and led to Iran vowing to break its end of the nuclear pact.

European Union leaders failed to reach an agreement Thursday on a proposal to reduce their net carbon emissions to zero by 2050.
Elections were held in the 28-member bloc in May, and leaders are in Brussels this week to set an agenda for the European Parliament’s next five-year term. The document will include broad guidelines on key issues facing the union, including migration, living standards and climate change.
President Emmanuel Macron of France said before the discussions on Thursday that the “climate emergency” should be addressed by “rallying around the objective to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.”
