“58,000 non-citizens voted in Texas, with 95,000 non-citizens registered to vote. These numbers are just the tip of the iceberg. All over the country, especially in California, voter fraud is rampant. Must be stopped. Strong voter ID! @foxandfriends”
— President Trump, in a tweet, Jan. 27, 2019
“Thousands of illegal aliens who have committed sexual crimes against children are right now in Texas prisons. Most came through our Southern Border. We can end this easily – We need a Steel Barrier or Wall. Walls Work! John Jones, Texas Department of Public Safety. @FoxNews”
— Trump, in a tweet, Jan. 13, 2019
“23% of Federal inmates are illegal immigrants. Border arrests are up 240%. In the Great State of Texas, between 2011 & 2018, there were a total of 292,000 crimes by illegal aliens, 539 murders, 32,000 assaults, 3,426 sexual assaults and 3000 weapons charges. Democrats come back!”
— Trump, in a tweet, Jan. 12, 2019
Everything is bigger in Texas. But not this big.

Several children in Mississippi had nowhere to go on Wednesday after their parents and caretakers were arrested in a series of Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids at seven food processing plants targeting undocumented immigrants. Some 680 people in six cities were apprehended in the massive sting, which federal officials characterized as possibly the largest worksite enforcement operation ever taken in a single state.
It remains unclear how long these families will be separated.
A number of kids reportedly walked home from school in the afternoon only to be locked out — their loved ones nowhere in sight. Others were picked up by family friends and acquaintances, some of whom brought the kids to their parents’ worksites so the children could wave goodbye to their moms and dads as they were loaded onto buses by federal agents.

There is a tool at the federal government’s disposal that was created in 1970 to take down mob bosses, mafia families and organized criminal enterprises — groups of people with a common ideology who made the United States less safe.
The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) allowed the FBI and the Justice Department to hold accountable not just the low-level henchmen doing the dirty work, but the leaders and organizers behind desks who were making plans and issuing directives.
Since it became federal law and statutes like it were adopted in 35 states, RICO has been used in lawsuits and criminal prosecutions to target New York’s five organized crime families, sex abuse in the Catholic church, corporate executives accused of contributing to the opioid epidemic, and street gangs such as MS-13 and the Bloods and the Crips.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s campaign has been thrown in Twitter jail.
After sharing a video of a profanity-laced protest outside of the Kentucky Republican’s home in Louisville, the campaign Twitter account, Team Mitch, has been locked out.
“This morning, Twitter locked our account for posting the video of real-world, violent threats made against Mitch McConnell. This is a problem with the speech police in America today,” McConnell campaign manager Kevin Golden told the Courier Journal. “The Lexington Herald-Leader can attack Mitch with cartoon tombstones of his opponents. But we can’t mock it.”

Sex trafficking victim Cyntoia Brown was released from prison Wednesday after serving 15 years of a life sentence for killing a man in 2004, the Tennessee Department of Corrections said in a statement.
Her story was first thrust into the spotlight when PBS aired a documentary about her in 2011 called, “Me Facing Life: Cyntoia’s Story.” Celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Rihanna have lobbied for her release in recent years.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam (R) granted clemency to Brown in January, commuting her life sentence for murder and making her eligible for release on Aug. 7.
A month earlier, the Tennessee Supreme Court had ruled that Brown must serve 51 years before she can be eligible for parole.

On Friday, Lewis Ziska, a climate scientist who specializes in plant physiology, left his job at the US Department of Agriculture after more than 20 years. On Monday, Helena Bottemiller Evich, a food and agriculture reporter at Politico, explained why. Ziska had worked on a groundbreaking study that found rising atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide are causing rice to lose nutrients—a potential disaster for the 600 million people worldwide who rely on rice as a staple. Science Advances, the journal that published the study, expected that it would attract widespread interest, and advised its authors to prepare resources for the media. The Department of Agriculture refused. Officials spiked a press release promoting Ziska’s work, and asked the University of Washington, a collaborator on the paper, not to promote it either. CNN requested an interview with Ziska. Agriculture’s press office said no. That was a first, Ziska said.

President Trump has not criticized the N.F.L. in recent months, but he is still having an impact on the league.
On Wednesday, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills criticized his boss, Stephen Ross, who owns the team, for hosting a re-election fund-raiser for the president this weekend on Long Island.
Stills said that Ross’s support of the president is incompatible with the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality, or RISE, a nonprofit group founded by Ross to use sports to improve race relations.

Every time a mass shooting occurs, the country talks about mental health. Many politicians are quick to point to the shooters’ disturbed minds. News reporters probe for “loner” tendencies or signs of instability.
“Mental illness and hatred pull the trigger. Not the gun,” said President Trump on Monday, after two mass shootings in less than 24 hours.
So is mental illness to blame for America’s mass shootings? Not according to research.
Some mass shooters have a history of schizophrenia or psychosis, but many do not. Most studies of mass shooters have found that only a small fraction have mental health issues. And researchers have noted a host of other factors that are stronger predictors of someone becoming a mass shooter: a strong sense of resentment, desire for infamy, copycat study of other shooters, past domestic violence, narcissism and access to firearms.
