Santa Catalina, one of California’s Channel Islands, lies southwest of Los Angeles. It’s known for its wildlife, dive sites, and Mt. Orizaba, its highest peak. The resort town of Two Harbors lies to the north. To the south, in the city of Avalon, palm trees and cabanas line Descanso Beach. Avalon’s circular, art deco Catalina Casino is a cultural center with a movie theater, ballroom, and museum.

Catalina Island is made for exploring, with more than 165 miles of trails, from easy to difficult, waiting for you to discover. Eighty-eight percent of Catalina Island is within the Catalina Island Conservancy, one of the oldest private land trusts in Southern California. Many visitors enjoy exploring the 37.2-mile Trans Catalina Trail.

If hiking outside of Avalon, you’ll need a hiking permit. You can get your permit, free of charge, online at the Catalina Island Conservancy, at the Conservancy House in Avalon, the Nature Center at Avalon Canyon, the Hermit Gulch campground office, Airport in the Sky, and Two Harbors Visitor Services.

For your safety, stay on designated trails and follow these recommended hiking tips:

• • Hike in groups of three or more

  • Dress appropriately

  • Beware of wild animals and rattlesnakes

  • Do not approach bison

  • Take plenty of water

The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania was established in 1952. It is home to the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth – the great migration of wildebeest and zebra. The resident population of lion, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, and birds is also impressive. There’s a wide variety of accommodation available, from luxury lodges to mobile camps. The park covers 5,700 sq miles, (14,763 sq km), it’s larger than Connecticut, with at most a couple hundred vehicles driving around.

The Matterhorn is a mountain of the Alps, straddling the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy. It is a large, near-symmetric pyramidal peak in the extended Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps, whose summit is 4,478 meters high, making it one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe.

Zermatt, in southern Switzerland’s Valais canton, is a mountain resort renowned for skiing, climbing, and hiking. The town, at an elevation of around 1,600m, lies below the iconic, pyramid-shaped Matterhorn peak. Its main street, Bahnhofstrasse is lined with boutique shops, hotels, and restaurants, and also has a lively après-ski scene. There are public outdoor rinks for ice-skating and curling.
