Police in Santa Cruz, California, say a teen who has been arrested and charged with the killing of his 8-year-old neighbor was standing nearby when they discovered her body.
The body of Madyson “Maddy” Middleton was found in a recycling dumpster Monday evening, about a day after she was last seen riding her scooter in the courtyard of her apartment complex.
On Wednesday, Santa Cruz District Attorney Jeffrey Rosell identified the suspect as 15-year-old Adrian Jerry Gonzalez and said that he will be charged as an adult with murder, sexual assault and kidnapping. He will be arraigned on Thursday. Police allege Gonzalez lured the girl into his apartment, where he killed her.

An Arizona man is suspected of decapitating his wife, killing and mutilating their two dogs, hacking off his own arm and gouging out his eye, police said Sunday.
Authorities stumbled onto the horrific scene on a quiet residential street in Phoenix on Saturday morning after a man told a 911 operator about a mentally ill neighbor involved in a “cutting” incident, police said in a statement.
When officers arrived at the apartment complex, they found a man with “a severed left forearm, cuts on his chest, and [he] appeared to be missing his right eye,” police said. “They could also see large amounts of blood on the floors, cabinets and walls of the apartment.”

As the nation reels from yet another high-profile gun violence tragedy — this time in a movie theater in Louisiana — photographer Joe Quint was, sadly, not surprised.
“We’ve come to accept [gun violence] as tragic and awful and a part of life, but no one expects to be sitting in a movie theater and watching a comedy and someone stands up and starts shooting,” Quint told The Huffington Post Friday. “That’s not normal.”
Despite the abnormality of the experience, Americans “haven’t had the collective shift in consciousness yet to rise up with a unified voice and say ‘enough’.”

Two teenage brothers are in police custody on suspicion that they killed their parents and three siblings, ranging in ages from 5 to 12 years old, in their Oklahoma home Wednesday night, police said.
A 13-year-old was also wounded and a 2-year-old was found unharmed after police in Broken Arrow responded to a wordless 911 call Wednesday night and discovered the bodies, Broken Arrow Police Cpl. Leon Calhoun said.
The teen suspects, aged 18 and 16, allegedly ran out the back door when officers arrived at the scene in the Tulsa suburb and were taken into custody in a wooded area, police said.

A Michigan oncologist who inflicted excessive and painful cancer treatments on hundreds of patients — many of whom didn’t have the disease in the first place — sobbed as he was sentenced Friday to spend what will likely be the rest of his life in prison, capping an emotional week in which a procession of victims told a federal judge how the scams had ravaged their bodies.
Farid Fata, who operated the racket from an empire of upscale clinics in the Detroit suburbs, began weeping before the punishment was even handed down.
Speaking publicly for the first time since his August 2013 arrest, Fata blamed greed and a “self-destructive” thirst for power.

A man who had been sought in the gruesome deaths of five people, including his own daughter, in Modesto, Calif., was arrested Sunday, police spokeswoman Heather Graves said.
Graves said that Martin Martinez, 30, also had a “past relationship” with one of the victims, all of whom were female. Three children — ages six months to six years — were among the dead. At least one of those girls was his daughter, Grave said.
Martinez was booked into Santa Clara County jail on suspicion of murder and was expected to be returned to Modesto, officials said. Police aren’t releasing information about a motive or cause of death at this time, Graves said.

New York City reached a settlement with the family of Eric Garner on Monday, agreeing to pay $5.9 million to resolve a wrongful-death claim over his killing by the police on Staten Island last July, the city comptroller and a lawyer for the family said.
The agreement, reached a few days before the anniversary of Mr. Garner’s death, headed off one legal battle even as a federal inquiry into the killing and several others at the state and local level remain open and could provide a further accounting of how he died.
Still, the settlement was a pivotal moment in a case that has engulfed the city since the afternoon of July 17, 2014, when two officers approached Mr. Garner as he stood unarmed on a sidewalk, and accused him of selling untaxed cigarettes. One of the officers used a chokehold — prohibited by the Police Department — to subdue him, and that was cited by the medical examiner as a cause of Mr. Garner’s death.

The infamous drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, head of Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa Cartel, escaped through a mile-long tunnel that started in his shower cell, the country’s top security official announced Sunday.
According to the Associated Press, Guzman was last seen about 9 p.m. Saturday in the shower area of the maximum-security Altiplano prison, where he was being held after his re-capture last year. Guzman disappeared from the prison’s security cameras and when authorities checked his cell, they found it empty save for a tunnel that terminated in a half-built house in a rural field near the prison. A manhunt was immediately started, and 18 employees of the prison have been brought in for questioning. It seems likely that Guzman had help with his escape as the tunnel was lighted and ventilated. Guzman has a reputation for paying off people and an estimated billion dollars…
