A rapist who was the target of a six-day manhunt after allegedly shooting a Tennessee cop was killed by police early Friday in what officials described as a “scary” conclusion.
Floyd Ray Cook, 62, was fatally shot near Burkesville, Kentucky, after being traced to a wooded area with the help of a police helicopter’s thermal camera.
Law enforcement agents converged on a building in the hunt for Cook, who was accused of shooting a Tennessee police officer during a traffic stop on Saturday.

UPDATE: 9:40 p.m. — Nevada officials ordered all Rejuvenice locations to shut down after discovering that the company was not licensed to perform cosmetic procedures, according to The Associated Press.
Previously:
A Henderson, Nevada, cryotherapy center manager froze to death inside one of the business’s freezing chambers, according to local news station KSNV.
The frozen body of Chelsea Ake, 24, was discovered by a fellow employee last Tuesday at Rejuvenice, a beauty salon that specializes in cryotherapy, the deep-freezing beauty and medical treatments.
Nevada’s Occupational and Safety Health Administration told KSNV that Ake was in the chamber for at least 10 hours before she was found and may have suffocated by inhaling the cooling nitrogen gases emitted into the chamber.

Early in the summer of 2013, Sarah Karp was reading through a report on a Board of Education Meeting when she came across something suspicious.
Buried in the report was a notice that the Board had voted to approve a $20.5 million no-bid contract to a company called SUPES to provide professional development for principals.
Karp, one of just five full-time employees at an education-focused newsmagazine called Catalyst Chicago, routinely looked through these lengthy reports after board meetings. She knew that it was rare for a no-bid contract to be awarded to a company for professional development services that other groups in the area could provide. Karp became even more suspicious when she found that Barbara Byrd-Bennett, the head of Chicago Public Schools, had worked as a consultant for SUPES immediately before she started at CPS as a consultant. After about a month of reporting, Karp published…

Tanzania took an important step this week to combat the ivory trade and save the African elephant.
The country’s National and Transnational Serious Crimes Investigation Unit on Thursday arrested a string of high-level ivory traffickers accused of illegally smuggling elephant tusks from East Africa to East Asia. Among those arrested was Yang Feng Glan, a 66-year-old Chinese native known as the “Queen of Ivory.”
Tanzania has accused Yang of smuggling 706 elephant tusks, weighing about 4,200 pounds and worth about $2.5 million, according to The Citizen, a local newspaper. She faces up to 30 years in prison, the U.S.-based watchdog Elephant Action League reported.

A 70-year-old Mississippi man is awaiting extradition on murder charges in the oldest cold case in El Paso, Texas, history — the 45-year-old stabbing death of a 21-year-old mom who police say turned down his romantic advances.
Doris Rivers was found dead inside her El Paso home shortly after midnight on Nov. 12, 1970, in front of her television, which was still on, according to news reports from the time.
There were no signs of a struggle, but Rivers — the mother of a young son, named DeVon — had five stab wounds in her back, neck and side. A kitchen knife was discovered broken off in her rib cage.

Because saying, “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people,” isn’t good enough.
President Barack Obama’s address to the nation on Thursday, hours after a gunman rampaged through a community college in Roseburg, Oregon, was the 15th time he has delivered remarks about a mass shooting during his presidency. Noting that the previous 14 killing sprees had failed to stir Congress to tighten gun laws, he took a more aggressive tone this time.
“This is a political choice that we make to allow this to happen every few months in America,” said Obama. “We collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones because of our inaction.”
The president went on to compare the nation’s response to gun violence with how we react to other kinds of tragedies.

The mural was supposed to inspire big dreams in the troubled neighborhood.
An artist was shot to death Tuesday while working on a public mural in Oakland, California, sponsored by a group trying to reduce violence in the troubled and changing neighborhood.
An argument broke out between the artist and shooter beneath a highway overpass around 10:30 a.m. as the artist worked on a painting called “Self as Superhero,” authorities said. The work had been designed as a collaboration between West Oakland middle school students and area muralists. Students were scheduled to work with artists at the site on Wednesday.
The gunman fled after the shooting and remained at large. The victim’s name wasn’t released, but police described him in a statement as an adult man. Police didn’t release a description of the shooter

Before a gun can be used to hunt, for protection, or in a mass school shooting like Thursday’s tragic killing at Umpqua Community College that left 10 dead, it must be bought. That one sale is a single dot in a multibillion-dollar industry, one that is coming under new scrutiny during the post-massacre gun control debate.
