When you’re in the running for a job, you often face a number of interviews. In some cases, the first one might be done by phone and take only about a half an hour. There are a lot of great ways to prepare for the classic, face-to-face interview, but what do you do when the person with the power to move you to the next round (or not) can’t even see you? Here’s how to crush your next phone interview.
Make a cheat sheet
We’ve recommended making a cheat sheet for job interviews and application questions before, but a phone interview is an even better time to make one since you can keep it in front of you without the interviewer ever knowing.
A phone interview, per Indeed, is designed to narrow down the pool of candidates for a job, so it will likely focus on your most relevant skills and experience, as well as your availability, desired salary, willingness to relocate (if necessary), and other basics. It’s not likely you’ll be asked the broader questions about how you perform on a team or overcome challenges, so as you’re making your cheat sheet, stick to descriptions of your education, experience, and standard desires in terms of money, benefits, and culture.
It’s also unlikely this will run over half an hour, so don’t write out anything too lengthy. Instead, try to keep it one page long. Consider writing out why you want the job, what skills you have that align with the ones listed in the job posting, and what your timeline for leaving your current role and transitioning to this one would be. Read and reread your sheet ahead of time and, once you know your talking points well, make any paragraphs into bullet points, so you don’t sound like you’re reading off a script.

From learning how to count change, to the pitfalls of credit cards and debit cards, to living on a budget, our kids have a lot to learn about money before they go off on their own. It would be great if personal finance was taught in school, but it rarely is, so it’s our job as parents to equip them with the knowledge and practice they need to develop a good relationship with money.
Those lessons can start even earlier than you might think, and you can build on them gradually over the course of their childhood. Here’s a practical guide for the knowledge to impart and the skills to help your kids develop—starting when they’re just 2 or 3 years old.
Teaching kids about money at ages 2-3
It may not seem like a toddler or young preschooler is ready to learn the ins and outs of budgeting, saving, and investing (they’re not), but they do like coins. A 2-year-old won’t be able to grasp the fact that a penny is worth less than a dime—nor will they care. But you can begin to introduce coins to them by letting them sort them or trace them, naming them as they do, so they start to become familiar with what each coin is called.

What Are the Different Types of Strollers?

An everyday stroller might be referred to as a full-size stroller or a traditional stroller. These are your base-style strollers that might have some bells and whistles or might not. Traditional strollers usually fit kids from newborn to around 50 pounds, depending on whether it includes a bassinet mode (see below) or if it can hold an infant car seat.
Lightweight strollers are also called travel or umbrella strollers—the latter name comes from the shape it (usually) has when folded up. These strollers have lighter builds and better folding options to make them easier to tote around but often lose out on other features. These usually fit little ones from newborn to around 50 pounds, depending on whether there’s a bassinet mode or infant car seat compatibility.
Jogging strollers have better suspension and higher quality wheels to make it a smooth ride while on the move but are usually much larger and have heavier frames than other types of strollers. These usually fit kids until about 50 pounds. They don’t typically hold newborns unless you convert it to hold a car seat or if the manufacturer has a bassinet attachment you can add.

“I’ve run into instances in work when dealing with a city, and we’re asking questions about consultants or contractors, and a lot of times they [can’t give the] answer because of the anti-affirmative action ban,” says Charity Marcus. She’s a consultant in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who works with cities, mapping out strategies for economic and community development.
In 2012, the Oklahoma legislature passed a ballot initiative known as the Oklahoma Affirmative Action Ban, or State Question 759. The amendment passed by over 230,000 votes. The first attempt to ban affirmative action in Oklahoma came in 2008, but the validity of the signatures for a ballot measure were questioned. In 2011, Republican state senator Rob Johnson authored the resolution. The measure was modeled after affirmative action bans in other states (currently nine states have affirmative action bans).
Unintended consequences
Jennifer Jezek, who is Native American, is the president and CEO of York Electronic Systems in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She says that she first learned about the ban around 2019 while serving on the Oklahoma Governor’s Minority Business Council.
Jezek says that when she was researching legislation to create the Oklahoma Supplier Diversity Initiative, she was told to “tread lightly” by associates at the Department of Commerce because of the ban. She dug deeper and had conversations with local attorneys who had worked on cases that were used as precedent for the law. Eventually, she ended up speaking to some of the original sponsors of the bill. State Senator Johnson and State Representative Leslie Osborn introduced the bill. Cosponsors of the measure included John Trebilcock, Mike Jackson, and David Derby. Jezek says she was told that the original bill was recommended by the legislature “in an attempt to avoid bias in college admissions.” But the unintended consequences, she says, were in state government hiring and public contracting.

Joseph, a 48-year-old network engineer from Texas, never set out to work three full-time remote jobs at the same time.
But last year, he earned a combined $344,000 doing just that, according to documents viewed by Insider. While the stress is starting to take a toll on him, he said the extra income had made a huge difference for his family and that he planned to keep it up as long as he could. In August, for instance, the extra income helped him pay off the remaining $129,000 on his mortgage, according to a document viewed by Insider.
In early 2020, when Joseph had one job, which paid $117,500 a year, he accepted a new remote role in the IT field with a $120,000 salary. But before he was out the door, he said a colleague convinced him to stay and try to work both jobs at once.
Joseph said he was doing only four to five hours a week of “actual work” in his position at the time, which made him think this was feasible. And if it became too much, he knew he could always quit one of the jobs.
“I hadn’t really heard anyone doing this before,” he told Insider. “My colleague mentioned it and I gave it a shot.”
He said he started working the second job that May, which initially required 30 to 40 hours of additional work a week. Roughly six months later, his new company announced a strategic shift that Joseph feared would put his role in jeopardy. He began looking for a new opportunity.

The past few years have drastically changed how we think about our relationship to work, perhaps permanently. However, they haven’t changed the fact that billions of people on this planet spend about half their waking hours exchanging labor for money in order to secure food and shelter. As such, work has remained an inescapable part of one’s identity. “What do you do?” is still a small-talk question not because the answer is usually interesting, but because the answer tells you something about the skills and knowledge that person has amassed. And when the answer is interesting, it’s hard not to feel some measure of admiration for someone whose experience falls so outside your own.
I’ve always been fascinated by those whose daily occupations carry meaning, promise adventure, or are in any way out of the ordinary. Of course, everybody’s dream job is different, but imagine swapping sitting at a computer or working on a production line for clearing landmines, dodging tornadoes, or braving the icy waters of the Bering Sea. Not for everyone, of course—but what astonishing ways to earn a living.
The examples you’ll encounter below range from the inspirational to the unfathomable. Who would want to toil 18-hour days, or climb to dizzying heights with little to no protection? For some, that sort of life holds a deep appeal, and herein lies the hook that draws you into these stories: In attempting to understand the motivations of others, we are by reflex attempting to understand ourselves. Each of these pieces moved me in some way, and I hope that they move you also.

For 35 years, Judy Henderson spent countless hours on a prison phone wishing she could hold her children. After a governor’s pardon set her free, she knew she couldn’t just forget about other moms like her.
Henderson, now 69, was convicted of capital murder for the death of a Springfield, Missouri, jeweler in 1982 and was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for 50 years, according to the Missouri Department of Corrections. She and her boyfriend had planned to rob the jeweler, but the robbery turned deadly when the man refused to give them a ring and other valuables. Henderson’s boyfriend fired a gun several times, killing the jeweler and injuring her, court records show.
Both were charged with murder, but only Henderson was found guilty. At the time, her son, Chip, was 3 and her daughter, Angel, was 12.
She was forced to trade the life she had with her children – driving Angel to tap dancing classes, afternoons baking brownies – for phone calls and visits to the Chillicothe Correctional Center, about 75 miles northeast of Kansas City.
Despite the distance, Henderson remained close to Angel by teaching her from afar how to cook sweet potatoes, supporting her through breakups, and helping her pick careers after college.
Mother’s Day was always particularly tough. Henderson welcomed holiday visits from Angel, who planned different meals each year. Sometimes Angel would bring a homemade meal, other times she’d buy prepared food.
“She would always visit on Mother’s Day,” Henderson said. “And when my mother was alive (they’d) come together along with most of my siblings.”
But Henderson had virtually no contact with Chip. Her ex-husband wouldn’t allow the boy to visit or even talk over the phone with her until he turned 16.
“When I walked into the visiting room, I didn’t even recognize him,” she said. “We both started crying. It was a moment that I would never forget.”
As the years passed and her children grew older, she also got to meet her three grandchildren – albeit from behind bars.
“It was very joyful, and it was heartbreaking that I couldn’t be with my daughter when they were born, and to walk her through the pregnancy in person,” Henderson said.

These pancakes are bananas. No, I mean they are literally made from bananas. And eggs. Eggs and bananas, and that’s it. I can see that look you’re giving me right now, but you just have to These two ingredients, whisked together and given a little skillet love, are truly something magical.

How Do These Only Have Two Ingredients?
These two-ingredient banana pancakes have been floating around the internet for several years now, first on fitness sites (protein! low fat!) and then on parenting sites (toddler-friendly!). Sightings finally reached critical mass, and I had to try them for myself. Needless to say, I’m hooked.
These pancakes are gluten-free and dairy-free — they really are made with just bananas and eggs, no tricks. It seems like you’d just end up with scrambled banana-eggs (yuck), but the final product truly resembles a pancake. Piping hot and golden brown, with crispy edges.
Do They Really Taste Like Pancakes?
These are pancakes in the sense that they’re cooked on a stovetop and are lovely drenched with syrup, but they are definitely not a replacement for your favorite Saturday morning recipe. But don’t be disappointed — they’re something.
Sara Wells of Our Best Bites describes them as being like “the middle of a piece of French toast,” and I will second that description. They are very custard-like with a soft, yielding texture and a creamy melt-in-your-mouth quality. I would also describe them as being like thick crêpes.
