Counting push-ups can help predict your risk of heart disease

.

Researchers at Harvard University were working with a pretty well-established idea: “Higher fitness levels would be associated with lower rates of incident cardiovascular disease.” Not exactly a groundbreaking observation.

But what was interesting was the reason for their work. What they hoped to figure out was whether there exists an easy, in-person way that doctors could assess heart disease risk in their patients. It turns out, it might be as simple as asking people to do push-ups, according to a new study published Feb. 15 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

As part of their research, the scientists followed 1,104 firefighters from 10 Indiana-based fire departments for a decade. When the firefighters would see their local doctors for routine check-ups, they were also checked for the number of pushups they could complete.

How to see the biggest, brightest supermoon of 2019

.

Skywatchers will get a special treat Tuesday when the biggest, brightest supermoon of 2019 lights up the night sky.

This will be the second in this year’s trio of back-to-back supermoons. The first occurred Jan. 21, and the third will fall on March 21.

A supermoon is a full moon that occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its monthly elliptical orbit around our planet. Since they’re a bit closer to us, supermoons appear larger and more luminous than ordinary full moons — though scientists are quick to point out that the difference is generally so subtle as to be imperceptible.

This Black History Month, We Reclaim Our Narrative

.

February is Black History Month. It has become the month the nation recognizes as a time to celebrate the strides and achievements black people have accomplished over the centuries. But — contrary to founder Carter G. Woodson’s intention — it has become the relegated timeframe to squeeze in as much information about a select few civil rights leaders while whitewashing their stories.

This year, we challenge that. HuffPost is celebrating Black History Month by highlighting our culture, narratives and wholeness with the theme Black History Built This.

Monthlong, we will challenge the revisionist history many have been taught about the role of blackness in this country by shining a light on the historical figures and events pertinent to accurately telling America’s history. More often than not, black people’s accomplishments and contributions to this country are understated or ignored completely. We are seldom given proper credit, let alone praise, for how our rich history and culture has not only influenced, but helped construct the basis for what we view as progress today. tangie

Living plastic-free: One activist fights a rising tide of pollution

Dianna Cohen is on alert. From the newspaper on her front stoop each morning, to the clothes she will pick up at the dry cleaner, to the lunch she’ll eat, to the shelves at her seemingly eco-friendly health food store — Cohen’s nemesis appears everywhere.

The world seems to be wrapped in plastic — and Cohen is not buying it. She is fighting to lead a life free of plastics, and to get others to do the same.

The Los Angeles native has taken her campaign against plastic waste — an annoyance of her youth and later the medium of her work as a visual artist — and made it her life’s cause.

Tomorrow’s cyber threats demand a new kind of cybersecurity workforce

.

In 2016, security researchers presented attendees of DEFCON, the annual Las Vegas hacker convention, with some unnerving findings about internet-connected smart locks: After testing over a dozen varieties of the devices across multiple manufacturers, the researchers found that 75 percent of them had major security vulnerabilities that left them exposed to hackers, who could unlock them from a quarter of a mile away.

For Steven Weber, a professor at the University of California School of Information and the director of The Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity, the security challenges facing smart locks epitomize a larger reality: When it comes to security, seemingly intangible digital vulnerabilities are increasingly having real-world practical consequences. This is a trend that will only increase as technology’s influence over everyday life continues to expand.

.

As “cybersecurity” becomes just “security” the industry will need a new kind of cybersecurity worker.

You Know the Lorena Bobbitt Story. But Not All of It.

Lorena is very matter-of-fact about the whole thing. There, she said as she drove us around in her Kia on a recent afternoon, was the hospital where surgeons reattached John Wayne Bobbitt’s penis after she cut it off with a kitchen knife as he slept on the night of June 23, 1993.

Fifteen minutes away, near Maplewood Drive, was the gravel-strewn field where she disposed of the detached penis out the driver’s side window. So, why did she throw it away? I asked. “I tried to drive the car, obviously, but I had this thing in my hand so I couldn’t drive so I got rid of it.” Obviously.
