Lil Nas X is riding his horse right into the history books with “Old Town Road,” breaking the record for the longest-running streak at the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The genre-defying summer smash has dominated the Hot 100 chart for its 17th consecutive week, surpassing previous record-holders “Despacito” by Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsi, and Justin Bieber, and 1995’s “One Sweet Day” by Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey, which both topped out at 16 weeks.
The 20-year-old rapper, who’s blocked competition like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish from securing the top spot in recent months, seemed all but certain that he’d reign once again, writing on Twitter last week, “what we doing to celebrate the billboard record when we break it y’all.” He also thanked anyone who streamed the song since its release.
High in the Himalayas, a heavy-coated dog trots behind the hem of a Buddhist monk’s robes. On the streets of Panama City, another dog collapses into a sliver of shade, escaping the heat of the midday sun. On their bodies cancer grows. Their tumors each appear unique—their swollen, crumbling contours flush with fresh blood vessels emerging from beneath a tail here or between the legs there. But the cells dividing inside each one, continents apart, are actually the same organism. If you can call a clump of 6,000-year-old cancer cells an organism.

A cancer-cum-sexually transmitted dog parasite that still thrives today is the only remnant of a now-extinct Siberian dog race.
When the world looks at the United States, it sees a land of exceptions: a time-tested if noisy democracy, a crusader in foreign policy, an exporter of beloved music and film.
But there is one quirk that consistently puzzles America’s fans and critics alike. Why, they ask, does it experience so many mass shootings?
Perhaps, some speculate, it is because American society is unusually violent. Or its racial divisions have frayed the bonds of society. Or its citizens lack proper mental care under a health care system that draws frequent derision abroad.

At least nine people were killed and 16 were wounded in a shooting early Sunday in Dayton, Ohio, the second American mass shooting in less than 24 hours and the third in a week.
The shooting began at 1 a.m. on East Fifth Street in the city’s Oregon entertainment district, the Dayton Police Department said. It said on Twitter that officers were “in the immediate vicinity when this shooting began and were able to respond and put an end to it quickly.”
Officers shot and killed the gunman, who was using a long gun, the police said.
“As bad as this is, it could have been much, much worse,” Lt. Col. Matt Carper, an assistant police chief, told reporters.

College students have long been criticized for drinking way too much alcohol in way too short a time. But they’re not the only ones.
A new study finds binge drinking to be a habit among some senior citizens, too.
.
Just more than 10% of older adults binge drink, putting them at risk for health problems, according to findings published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Researchers surveyed more than 10,000 adults older than 64 about their alcohol use over the prior month between 2015 and 2017.
.
Excessive alcohol consumption is considered a risky behavior for older adults due to aging-related physical changes, such as an increased risk of falling, experts said. The likelihood of having chronic health issues is also a concern for older binge drinkers.
South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg expressed concerns Saturday that the U.S. is “under attack” by white nationalists carrying out mass shootings — and those white nationalists have been encouraged by President Donald Trump.
Buttigieg was one of 19 Democratic presidential candidates speaking at a forum in Las Vegas sponsored by the public-sector labor union AFSCME. During the event, co-moderated by HuffPost’s Amanda Terkel and The Nevada Independent’s Jon Ralston, news broke of a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, in which at least 20 people were killed and 26 others injured.
Unconfirmed reports indicated the suspected shooter, a 21-year-old from the Dallas area, posted a manifesto to the 8chan message board hours before the shooting, in which he allegedly professed his white nationalist ideology and his belief that Texas is under “Hispanic invasion.” Law enforcement officials said they are aware of the document but have yet to confirm the shooter did, in fact, write it.
At least 20 people were killed on Saturday in an armed attack at a Walmart in El Paso, the nation’s second mass shooting in less than a week after three fatalities at a garlic festival in Gilroy, Calif., last Sunday.
Saturday’s bloodshed in Texas represented the 31st mass killing by firearms in 2019. A mass killing is defined by the Justice Department as three or more killings in a single episode. There is no legal definition for the term “mass shooting,” despite its frequent use by gun control groups and the news media.

Texas Republican Rep. Will Hurd — a frequent critic of President Donald Trump who represents one of the most competitive districts in the country — will not seek reelection, he announced Thursday.
“I have made the decision to not seek reelection for the 23rd Congressional District of Texas in order to pursue opportunities outside the halls of Congress to solve problems at the nexus between technology and national security,” he tweeted Thursday.

The former CIA agent referenced China’s geopolitical threat, international competition in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, and instability in Central America as issues he hoped to address outside of Congress, citing the role of “the private sector and civil society.”
There are many pressing issues facing our world. Climate change driven by human activity is probably the most urgent. Another issue, however, is the by-products of industry, such as microplastics. Microplastics are defined as small bits, smaller than 5 millimeters in length, that collect in our wastewater and make it through most filtration systems into our oceans and rivers. Subsequently, everything living in those bodies of water is affected—from coral reefs ingesting plastics to the entire marine food chain. There’s a good chance that anything you’ve eaten in the past week had a little bit of plastic in it.
A teenager from an island off of southern Ireland, inspired by the remnants of an oil spill, has come up with a novel way to use NASA-invented magnetic liquid to extract microplastics from water. Eighteen-year-old Fionn Ferreira hypothesized that he could pull out about 85% of the microplastics in his experiment. As Business Insider explains, NASA engineer Steve Papell, in trying to magnetize rocket fuel in 1963 to combat zero-gravity conditions in space, created the first ferrofluid.
