Ryan Seacrest is joining “Live” as Kelly Ripa’s new co-host, jump-starting a new era in the morning television ratings race.
Two sources with knowledge of the deal confirmed the news to CNN prior to Monday’s broadcast, on which Ripa and Seacrest broke the news to viewers.
“Today, the next chapter of the ‘Live’ story is about to be written,” Ripa said..Ripa thanked all of the temporary co-hosts who had filled in during the search, saying, “They are a part of the ‘Live’ family forever.”
She then increased the anticipation by going to commercial break before bringing Seacrest on stage.
“So happy,” Seacrest said as he embraced Ripa before the audience. “So exciting.”
Seacrest, one of the world’s best-known broadcasters, has co-hosted “Live” five times as a guest since ABC began the search for Michael Strahan’s replacement one year ago.

Filmmaker Jonathan Demme, whose Oscar-winning thriller “The Silence of the Lambs” terrified audiences and introduced one of the most indelible villains in movie history, died Wednesday morning in New York. He was 73.
He died of complications from esophageal cancer, according to a statement from his publicist..Demme won consistent acclaim as the director of such diverse movies as the Talking Heads concert film “Stop Making Sense”; “Philadelphia,” the 1993 drama starring Tom Hanks as a lawyer battling AIDS; and “Beloved,” the 1998 Oprah Winfrey movie based on Toni Morrison’s bestseller about a 19th century slave haunted by the ghost of her daughter..But it’s “Silence of the Lambs” for which he was best known. The 1991 movie, based on Thomas Harris’ novel, swept the Academy Awards the following year, winning Oscars for best picture and its two stars, Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, whose Hannibal Lecter character became a cultural icon. Demme also won the Oscar for best director.

Erin Moran, the former child actor who played the sweet but mischievous Joanie on the television series “Happy Days” and “Joanie Loves Chachi,” has died. She was 56.
The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department in southern Indiana confirmed her death. Ms. Moran was found unresponsive Saturday afternoon and died in her home in New Salisbury, Ind., the authorities said.
An autopsy showed that she most likely died from complications of cancer, the sheriff’s department said in a statement on Monday.
Ms. Moran, who started acting at 5, got her first taste of television in a commercial for First Federal Bank. She went on to play minor characters on television and in film in the late 1960s and early ’70s. At 12, she landed her biggest role: Joanie, the freckle-faced troublemaker and sister of Richie Cunningham, the all-American teenager played by Ron Howard.

“I’d rather be smoking weed whenever we breathe.” When Rihanna sang those words on “James Joint,” the second track on her Anti album, it felt like a slight sea change in pop history.
Marijuana smoke has likely long swirled through the recording studios of major label artists, but rarely has it been so specifically name dropped and praised on record by an pop icon of this caliber. It came at a crucial time, no less, when 2016 was just starting to gear up for recreational or medical marijuana legalization votes in nine states, eight of which eventually passed.
When all is said and done, Rihanna may go down as one of the most important stoners in modern music, joining a long lineage of cannabis-loving musicians who found have inspiration in the herb — from Bob Marley and Willie Nelson, back to Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong — and have returned the favor with advocacy.
Had marijuana never gained the cultural fascination it did in America, music history would likely be unrecognizable.
