The French novelist Antoine de Saint-Exupéry once said, “What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well.”

Sir Roger Moore, who embodied the heartthrob swagger of the world’s most famous spy “James Bond” for a dozen years, has died in Switzerland after a short battle with cancer, his family said Tuesday in a statement posted to Twitter.
Moore was 89.
“It is with a heavy heart that we must announce our loving father, Sir Roger Moore, has passed away today in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer,” his family’s statement read. “The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone.”
After replacing Sean Connery in the James Bond films, Moore played the infamous British spy from 1973 until 1985. He made his 007 debut in the film “Live and Let Die,” and last appeared as the suave secret agent in “A View to a Kill.” He was the longest serving Bond in the film’s series.

Bond died at home on Tuesday following a short illness, his publisher HarperCollins announced Wednesday in a statement on Facebook, calling him a “giant of children’s literature.”
.
Bond was born in Berkshire, England in 1926 and began writing in 1945, after serving in World War II.
.
He was working as a cameraman for the BBC when he came up with the idea of a small toy bear that he named after Paddington Station in London, near where he was living at the time.

I Am Not Your Negro, a film built around James Baldwin’s unfinished project examining the slayings of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr., is not a pretty story. But it is an important one.
Both mesmerizing and deeply disturbing, the film mixes Baldwin’s writings and public speeches with visual footage from the 1960s civil rights movement and more recent racial incidents including the beating of Rodney King and protests in Ferguson, Missouri. The result is a compelling meditation on race relations in the United States and what they say about the moral foundation of the nation.
This is not an easy movie to watch, at least for this white woman. It made me flinch; it made me uncomfortable. It made me question my own approach to and position in the world. It made me wonder what James Baldwin would think of me.

In a signature role, West played Bruce Wayne and his alter ego, the crime-fighting, costumed Batman, a popular comics character who came to life on the ABC-TV series. The show, with a catchy — some might say aggravating — theme song, earned a cult following.
.
The series lasted three seasons and enjoyed a long afterlife in syndication.
West later supplied the voice of Mayor Adam West, the oddball leader of Quahog, Rhode Island, on the animated series “Family Guy.”

In 2010 we had “icing.” Then came “planking.” Then, of course, the infamous ice bucket challenge. If Snapchat and Instagram are any indication, this summer’s hottest viral prank could be the “lava challenge.”
It’s a simple game. A friend shouts “the floor is lava!” and you have exactly 5 seconds to get to higher ground. This could mean climbing a store shelf, hopping on a fire hydrant or jumping on the counter of a fast-food restaurant.
The game itself has been around on schoolyards for years — you probably remember it from your childhood — but a pair of friends named Kevin Freshwater and Jahannah James helped it reach viral new heights.

This is just amazing. Not only is it huge, the proportions are correct. It took someone a lot of time to map it out and even more to plant it. I don’t know who they are, but thank you for what you have done. With things which are currently going on in our country, it is great to see the American Spirit is still alive.
THE ONLY FLAG THAT DOESN’T FLY
Between the fields where the flag is planted, there are nine-plus miles of flower fields that go all the way to the ocean. The flowers are grown by seed companies. It’s a beautiful place, close to Vandenberg AFB.
.
Check out the dimensions of the flag. The floral flag is 740 feet long and 390 feet wide and maintains the proper flag dimensions, as described in executive order #10834.
.
This flag is 6.65 acres and is the first floral flag to be planted with five pointed stars, comprised of white larkspur. Each star is 24 feet in diameter, each stripe is 30 feet wide.
.
This flag is estimated to contain more than 400,000 larkspur plants with four-to-five flower stems each, for a total of more than two million flowers.
It’s for our soldiers.
When you receive this, please stop and say a prayer for our servicemen and women.
.
Please keep the men and women of our ARMED FORCES in your daily thoughts and prayers.
.
Also keep the men and women of LAW ENFORCEMENT in your daily thoughts and prayers.

A group of vigilantes has stepped in to restore forgotten historical sites in Naples’ Vergini neighbourhood.
Naples has a history problem: there’s just too much of it.
Greek cemeteries, Roman ruins, medieval castles, Renaissance churches… it’s more than one city can maintain, and some sites will inevitably crumble – unless passionate locals take matters into their own hands.
I met one of these restoration vigilantes on the metro. By day, Maria Corbi, an expert in art history, manages the art installations found in 11 subway stations that double as public galleries. But by night (and evenings and weekends) she’s a founding member of the SMMAVE Association, which is currently restoring an abandoned church in the neglected district of Vergini Sanità.
