An hour after sunrise on June 28, Mike Safyan and nine co-workers from Planet Labs gathered in their San Francisco office for a pancake breakfast. It was a Sunday, so business was closed.
But this weekend morning was too momentous for Safyan and crew to stay home. Their 5-year-old start-up, which builds shoebox-sized satellites to orbit Earth and capture images of the planet, had eight “doves,” as they’re known, aboard an unmanned SpaceX capsule that was headed for the International Space Station.
If all went as planned, within about a month those satellites would join a fleet of 36 Planet Labs doves orbiting the Earth.

The car company opened a new research and development facility in Mountain View Thursday, the company’s largest such facility outside of its headquarters in Japan. Honda also unveiled its new 2016 Accord, which will be the first in the company’s lineup to support both Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto platforms.
The refreshed Accord sports a redesigned exterior that Honda says is sportier and “more sophisticated” with a new aluminum hood and 19-inch wheels. Inside, the car is equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen display that supports both Apple CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto. The car will be available in the same four- and six-cylinder engine variations as the 2015 Accord.
Honda says it plans to make Android Auto and CarPlay available to more of its cars, but didn’t elaborate on which cars might be next to get the update.

Here are a few tips on how to reduce your impact on our planet 3-5 times a day just by stuffing your face with deliciousness.
1. Buy Organic. Organic food is higher in nutrients, free of neurotoxins, free of pesticides, hasn’t been gas ripened, supports biodiversity and generally just tastes better. If you can’t afford to do a full organic shop start with what you can afford and make sure to always wash non-organic food in a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar to remove the majority of the pesticides.
2. Buy Local. Reduce your food miles.Food miles refer to the number of miles between the farm your food came from and the place you bought it. For example if you bought a delicious mango from your local supermarket that has come from Mexico that’s roughly 5551 miles as the crow flies! Find your local farmers market and see…

CAROL's WORLDS
Fantasy movies have rocked the screen this summer. While Self / less is not about a super hero, it touches on a subject that we’ve explored forever, immortality. I’m going to critique this movie in two parts. The first part for those who have not seen Self / less and the second part those who have. So part two not only will give away the story but basically be huge spoiler.

The 11 million Americans who receive Social Security disability face steep benefit cuts next year, the government said Wednesday, handing lawmakers a fiscal and political crisis in the middle of a presidential campaign.
The trustees who oversee Social Security and Medicare said the disability trust fund will run out of money in late 2016. That would trigger an automatic 19 percent cut in benefits, unless Congress acts.
The average monthly benefit for disabled workers and their families is $1,017. The typical beneficiary would see a reduction of $193 a month.

Joanne Jones, an occupational therapist from Warwick, Rhode Island, has made an unlikely foe in the past year: Securus Technologies, a billion-dollar prison technology company based in Dallas.
Sitting at her kitchen table one recent afternoon in front of a stack of Securus bills, Jones explained that her 29-year-old son, Nate Jones, had been arrested on an aggravated robbery charge in January 2014. Her son’s life may have taken a negative turn, but Jones tries to keep in touch with him as often as possible.
They speak roughly once a week in a 15-minute phone call, and speak for another 25 minutes on a video chat. Jones says she’d travel to Texas to visit her son in person, but Hays County Jail, where he is locked up, banned visitations in November 2013. That happened shortly after the county jail entered into a contract with Securus.
