An experimental vaccine tested on thousands of people in Guinea exposed to Ebola seems to work and might help shut down the ongoing epidemic in West Africa, according to interim results from a study published Friday.
There is currently no licensed treatment or vaccine for Ebola, which has so far killed more than 11,000 people in West Africa since the world’s biggest outbreak began in the forest region of Guinea last year.
“If proven effective, this is going to be a game-changer,” said Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization, which sponsored the study. “It will change the management of the current outbreak and future outbreaks.”

Not too long ago, metal 3D printing was rather rare. It wasn’t long though before all interested parties had their interests piqued, wondering about the possibilities. As the technology entered major industrial processes at great expense and initial experimentation, the world began to see it as an emerging and extremely viable and useful process.
With the world of 3D printing in metal comes power and strength both in materials and in resulting 3D products. While often all we need is a simple 3D print in ABS or PLA, for high quality and highly functioning components–like those often required in the automotive or aerospace industries–metal 3D printing is becoming invaluable and leading to numerous creations that simply could not have been fabricated previously.

I have rituals I have to follow when it comes to weighing myself, which I do every morning.
I used to weigh myself all day long, back when I was anorexic. But now that I binge, it just depresses me because my weight shoots up mid-day and I just end up hating myself even more and it’s not good.
So, every morning, I get up and the first thing I do is use the bathroom. I make sure my hands are exceptionally dry after I wash them so I don’t have any extra weight from the water. I make sure to wear the same thing each morning. I used to weigh naked, but I can’t do that right now.** I ensure the scale is in the same spot and stable, all four legs touching the floor. I make sure nothing is in my hair, I’m not wearing any jewelry, there’s…
New research indicates that Washington, D.C., is rapidly sinking into the ocean, news that might not make the rest of the country all that sad.
The research, from the University of Vermont, the U.S. Geological Survey and several other institutions, projects the land beneath the Washington area will drop 6 or more inches in the next 100 years. That’s in addition to rising sea levels due to climate change, which is melting ice sheets and causing thermal expansion of the oceans. Climate change has already caused 8 inches of sea level rise since 1880, and is expected to raise average global sea levels another 1 to 4 feet by the end of this century.
Relative sea level rise in the Chesapeake Bay region is happening faster than any other part of the Atlantic coast, according to tidal records, and twice as fast as global averages.

If anything unusual happens to you Friday, you’ll be right to say it was “once in a blue moon.”
The July 31 appearance of the month’s second full moon will be the first such occurrence in the Americas since August 2012. Every month has a full moon, but because the lunar cycle and the calendar year aren’t perfectly synched, about every three years we wind up with two in the same calendar month.
But Earth’s satellite will most likely not appear blue at all.

The blue moon will happen July 31. Most of the time, the blue moon isn’t actually blue.
More than 37,000 migrants have been blocked from illegally crossing from France into England this year, according to the company operating the tunnel between the countries.
Service in the Eurotunnel has been disrupted repeatedly in recent weeks by migrants’ attempts in the French city of Calais to board trucks or trains heading to the U.K.
France’s Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Wednesday that nine migrants have died in attempts since June 26 and that he will be deploying 120 additional police to stem the crisis.

What I loved most about Southpaw was the absence of all the bells and whistles. It was straight story telling at it’s best. No extraneous, over-the-top scrap to glamorize the movie — they just worked hard to keep it real. Performances by Jake Gyllenhaal who played Billy Hope and Rachel McAdams who played his wife Maureen Hope were brilliant. A couple who came up through the system hit it big when as a professional boxer, Billy became the light heavyweight champion of the world, 43 wins vs 0 losses. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson plays Billy’s manager, Jordan Mains, who was into everything from fixing fights to getting $30M HBO deals. All seemed well until tragedy hit and Billy lost everything, including his daughter to Child Protective Services. Southpaw is about Billy’s journey back with the help of Forest Whitaker who plays Titus “Tick” Wills, owner of a gym where Billy…
A University of Cincinnati officer who shot a motorist during a traffic stop over a missing front license plate has been indicted on murder charges, a prosecutor said Wednesday, adding that the officer “purposely killed him” and “should never have been a police officer.”
Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters announced the grand jury indictment at a news conference to discuss developments in the investigation into the July 19 shooting of 43-year-old motorist Samuel DuBose by Officer Ray Tensing.
Tensing has said he was dragged by DuBose’s car and forced to shoot after he pulled over DuBose for a missing front license plate, according to a university police report. Tensing said in his radio call to a dispatcher that the car almost ran over him and he fired one shot, striking DuBose in the head.

Homeless women typically know where to find a safe place to sleep or a hot meal to eat. But when it comes to taking care of their feminine hygiene needs, they often have nowhere to turn.
Tampons and sanitary pads usually top the list of needs at shelters, since they’re pricey and supporters don’t often donate them, social workers told Al Jazeera. Compounding the issue is the fact that clean showers are also scarce, and not washing during menstruation can lead to infections.
It’s a desperate situation that many homeless women feel resigned to accept.
