A suspected gunman who ambushed Dallas police headquarters Saturday morning was shot and is believed to be dead, the city’s police chief said.
SWAT snipers struck the suspect through the windshield of his van in the Dallas suburb of Hutchins during a standoff in which no officers or civilians were hurt, Police Chief David Brown told reporters.
But because officers found bags with explosives that had been “spread out all over police headquarters,” police were not approaching the van, he said.

An act of kindness by four young brothers has kept a 75-year-old woman from going to jail.
When the grass on Gerry Suttle’s lawn reached a height of 18 inches, a notice was supposedly issued asking her to appear before a judge. An ordinance for the city of Riesel, Texas, where Suttle lives, states that the “growth of weeds and grass may not exceed 18 inches.”
But Suttle never got the notice — she says it was never delievered — and a warrant for her arrest was issued, local news station KWTX reports.

In 2012, the Census Bureau announced that nonwhite births exceeded white births for the first time. In 2013, it noted that more whites were dying than were being born. In March, it projected that non-Hispanic whites would be a minority by 2044.
But the forecast of an imminent white minority, which some take as a given, is wrong. We will seem like a majority-white society for much longer than is believed.
The predictions make sense only if you accept the outdated, illogical methods used by the census, which define as a “minority” anyone who belongs to “any group other than non-Hispanic White alone.” In the words “group” and “alone” lie a host of confusions.

Prison seamstress Joyce Mitchell gave hacksaw blades, drill bits and lighted eyeglasses to fugitive felons Richard Matt and David Sweat before their breakout nearly one week ago, sources said.
Mitchell “provided some form of equipment or tools” to the inmates while her husband, Lyle, “possibly could have been involved or at least had knowledge” of the escape, Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie told CNN on Friday. The information was developed through interviews.

Problem drinking is more pervasive and less frequently treated than previously thought, thanks to an updated definition of what constitutes “alcohol use disorder.”
A study published on June 3 in the journal JAMA Psychiatry surveyed U.S. adults 18 and older on their alcohol consumption habits between 2012 and 2013. Results were analyzed using the definition of alcohol use disorder in the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which was published in 2013.
While older editions divided alcohol use disorder into two categories, alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence, the new definition eliminated categories. Instead, it measures alcohol use disorder using a spectrum of abuse criteria ranging from mild to severe.
