Belgium put the capital Brussels on maximum security alert on Saturday, shutting the metro and warning people to avoid crowds because of a “serious and imminent” threat of coordinated, multiple attacks by militants.
A week after the Paris bombings and shootings carried out by Islamic State militants, of whom one suspect from Brussels is at large and said by police to be highly dangerous, Brussels was placed on the top level “four” in the government’s threat scale after a meeting of top ministers, police and security services.
Soldiers were on guard in parts of Brussels, including at the institutions of the European Union headquartered in the city. Brussels is also home to the headquarters of NATO.

The Belgian jihadi suspected of masterminding deadly attacks in Paris died along with his cousin in a police raid on a suburban apartment building, officials said Thursday.
Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins’ office said 27-year-old Abdelhamid Abaaoud was identified based on skin samples, but authorities did not know how he died. His body was found in the apartment building targeted in the chaotic and bloody raid in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis on Wednesday.
Three police officials say a woman who died in the raid was Abaaoud’s cousin. One said Hasna Aitboulahcen is believed to have detonated a suicide vest after a brief conversation with police officers.

Police officers hunting suspects involved in the Paris terror attacks exchanged gunfire during an apartment raid in the suburb of Saint-Denis early Wednesday. Before the seven-hour operation ended, two suspects were dead and seven others had been taken into custody.
The suspects who died were not identified, but French President François Hollande confirmed their link to the attacks that swept Paris Friday night, killing at least 129 people. One of the suspects was a woman who perished after detonating a bomb at the scene, the French prosecutors’ office said.
Police said multiple suspects related to the Paris attacks were believed to be holed up in the apartment, including Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the alleged mastermind, Agence France-Presse reports. Salah Abdeslam, whom authorities have been hunting for since Saturday, was also believed to be inside.

Islamic State warned in a new video on Monday that countries taking part in air strikes against Syria would suffer the same fate as France, and threatened to attack in Washington.
The video, which appeared on a site used by Islamic State to post its messages, begins with news footage of the aftermath of Friday’s Paris shootings in which at least 129 people were killed.
The message to countries involved in what it called the “crusader campaign” was delivered by a man dressed in fatigues and a turban, and identified in subtitles as Al Ghareeb the Algerian.

French police said at least 140 people were killed and dozens were wounded in a series of attacks at at least seven locations in Paris, including shootings at several restaurants and cafes in the city Friday night. At least 100 people were killed inside Paris’ Le Bataclan music hall after terrorists stormed the theater, taking concert goers hostage and systematically killing them. Another at least 40 people died in attacks throughout the city.
A shooting occurred at the Le Petit Cambodge restaurant in the city’s 10th district. At the same time there were reports of an explosion at a bar near Stade de France. An explosion could be heard clearly during the soccer match between France and Germany.
“Everyone was outside on the terrace of the restaurant when all of a sudden we saw these masked men start firing in all directions,” a witness outside the Le Petit Cambodge restaurant told the BBC. “It felt like it lasted a long time.”
