Hurricane Matthew’s eyewall whipped parts of Florida’s northeast coast Friday afternoon, marching up the southeastern United States after its deadly spree across the Caribbean.
Three deaths in Florida may be tied to the hurricane, officials said. The storm weakened to a Category 3 hurricane overnight after decimating Haiti, where the death toll rose Friday to more than 800, according to Reuters. NBC News could not immediately confirm that number.

The fiercest winds from Hurricane Matthew stayed off Florida’s coast as the storm raked the Atlantic shoreline Friday but predicted storm surges in Georgia and the Carlonias could cause “life-threatening” flooding, forecasters said.
Hurricane Matthew was packing sustained winds of 105 mph as it churned northwards towards Savannah Saturday, the National Hurricane Center said at 11 p.m.
Storm surges of up to 9 feet are possible from Flager Beach in Florida to Edisto Beach, S.C., and surges of up to 6 feet could occur on a stretch of coast that includes Charleston to Cape Fear, the hurricane center said.

Florida authorities sounded alarms not heard in years as Hurricane Matthew weakened early Friday but stayed on a path for the state’s east coast.
In a 2 a.m. ET bulletin, the National Hurricane Center said it had been downgraded to a Category 3 storm but warned that the “eye of extremely dangerous” storm was moving closer to the east coast of Florida.
The first band of rain from Matthew arrived in Florida on Thursday, ahead of a projected landfall — or near-landfall — between West Palm Beach and Cape Canaveral that Gov. Rick Scott warned would be “catastrophic.”
“There is no reason not to leave,” Scott grimly warned as the storm, which killed at least 128 people across the Caribbean, moved ever closer.

The most powerful Atlantic tropical storm in more than a decade was gearing up Monday to deliver a potentially devastating blow to Haiti — a Caribbean country that’s still struggling to rebound from a series of earlier natural disasters.
Packing 130 mph winds, Hurricane Matthew was already lashing the Caribbean country with torrential rains as it crawled northward on Monday.
Jamaica and Cuba are also in path of the storm, and the Dominican Republic was expected to absorb a glancing blow. But Haiti will likely feel the full impact of Matthew’s fury later Monday when the center reaches the southwestern coast of the country.

Two Vincent Van Gogh paintings have been recovered by police in Italy 14 years after being stolen, officials said Friday.
Police in Naples said the works — described as being of “priceless value” — were discovered during a crackdown targeting the Naples-based Camorra crime clan, The Associated Press reported.
They were taken from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in 2002 and “appear to be in relatively good condition,” according to a news release announcing the discovery.

A speeding commuter train plowed into a platform inside NJ Transit’s Hoboken Terminal during the Thursday morning rush hour, killing a woman and injuring 108 other people, officials said.
The train was traveling “at much too high rate of speed,” crashing through a series of barriers and taking down an interior wall of the station just before 9 a.m. ET, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said at a news conference after assessing the damage.
Witnesses reported seeing bruised and bloodied passengers, including a woman pinned underneath concrete. Riders had to break through train windows and climb to safety, helping one another amid rubble and twisted steel.

A 14-year-old boy shot a teacher and two young pupils, one of whom was critically wounded, at a South Carolina elementary school Wednesday, and his father was later found dead by the suspect’s grandmother at a nearby home, authorities said.
One of the injured boys, identified as Jacob Hall, was still listed in critical condition Thursday morning at Greenville Health System Children’s Hospital in Anderson County. No further details, including Jacob’s age, were provided. The teacher, a woman later identified as Meghan Hollingsworth, and the other boy were treated and released from a hospital.
The suspect, who officials said was home-schooled, was taken into custody without incident on the grounds of Townville Elementary School at 1:45 p.m. by a 30-year veteran of the Townville Volunteer Fire Department, authorities said.

Shimon Peres, who led Israel as prime minister and president in an enduring six-decade political career built on promoting peace between Arabs and Jews, died Tuesday while being hospitalized from a major stroke, his family announced.
He was 93.
“Today, with deep sorrow, we bid farewell to our beloved father, the ninth president of Israel, Shimon Peres,” Peres’ son, Chemi Peres, said at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv at around 7 a.m. Wednesday local time (midnight ET).
“He was one of the founding fathers of the state of Israel and served our people before we even had a country of our own. He worked tirelessly for Israel, from the very first day of the state to the last day of his life,” Chemi Peres said.
