A senior al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula leader who claimed the group’s responsibility for the Charlie Hebdo massacre and the murder of an American hostage during a botched raid in December has been killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen, it was announced Thursday.
Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) announced the death of leader Nasr bin Ali al-Ansi and other operatives by a U.S. drone strike in a video, which was verified by security consulting firm and NBC News partner Flashpoint Intelligence.
Al-Ansi had appeared in several militant videos for the group, including one claiming responsibility for the Paris attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on Jan. 7, which left 12 people dead.

Four suicide bombers hit a pair of crowded mosques in Yemen’s capital of Sanaa on Friday, killing at least 137 people and injuring more than 300 others, officials told NBC News.
The ISIS affiliate in war-torn Yemen claimed responsibility for the attacks, according to Flashpoint Intelligence, a global security firm and NBC News consultant. It was the first large-scale attack claimed by the Sunni militants in Yemen, which has been in a state of chaos since Shiite Houthi rebels launched a violent power grab.
Dr. Alia Saria, head of emergency services at Yemen’s Ministry of Public Health and Population, confirmed the death toll to NBC News and said “hundreds” were injured. Mohammed Albasha, Yemen’s spokesperson in Washington, put the number of injured above 300. Albasha said the bombers struck Badr and al-Hashoosh mosques during Friday prayers — traditionally the busiest time of the week. Both mosques were hit by two bombers using similar tactics: one would detonate explosives inside the building while the second waited outside for people to flee before blowing himself up, Albasha explained.

ISIS purportedly claimed responsibility for the Tunisia Bardo Museum massacre in an online audio recording posted on a website linked to the group, analysts said Thursday.
An unsigned statement identified the two dead attackers as “Abu Zakaria al-Tunisi” and “Abu Anas al-Tunisi” and called them “knights of the Islamic State,” according to security analysts Flashpoint Intelligence.
An audio version of the claim said that the attack targeted “citizens of the Crusader countries” and that Allah had “brought terror to the hearts of the infidels.”

The Nigerian militant group Boko Haram has pledged official allegiance to ISIS, according to an audio statement released online Saturday. In the audio, a man claiming to be Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau appears to address ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, and also calls on Muslims throughout the world to declare a similar loyalty.
The message, posted via Boko Haram social media accounts, was confirmed by Flashpoint Intelligence, a global security firm and NBC News consultant. According to Flashpoint, the audio confirms what many analysts have said would happen: a bridging between Boko Haram and ISIS. Boko Haram is also following ISIS’s trend of releasing messages online and mimicking the terror network’s propaganda.
The announcement comes after five bomb blasts rocked the Nigerian city of Maiduguri on Saturday, killing at least 54 people and wounding 143 others in Boko Haram’s northeastern heartland.

While reports of his death have circulated before, the latest claim is considered “far more reliable” because it originated from jihadis “familiar with ISIS activities in Syria and Iraq” themselves, global security firm and NBC News counterterrorism consultant Flashpoint Intelligence said. NBC News could not independently verify the reports.
Al-Amriki claimed to be an American but it was not clear if he was actually a U.S. citizen. “Al-Amriki has a heavy accent when speaking English and might have only spent a short amount of time in the U.S. or migrated there at an older age,” Flashpoint noted, adding that he “rose up the ranks of the group very quickly.”
It was not immediately clear when or where he died.
