Extremists have used the internet to build membership, advance their credibility and to mobilise for direct action. The last 3-5 years has seen a growth in populist movements across Europe. In contrast to previous years, these movements are characterised by

a) Greater co-ordination across national borders;

b) A focus on values and xenophobia rather than race;

c) Emphasis on local activism and street demonstrations in addition to traditional electoral politics.

This is of concern to policymakers at both a European and national level. This has become increasingly the case following the terrorist attacks in Oslo in 2011.

These groups, like the English Defence League (EDL) or the Greeks Golden Dawn, style themselves as pseudo-paramilitary organizations, and utilise the Internet and social network sites to organise demonstrations and recruit new members.

Rights groups have warned of an explosion in racist violence over the last year. They say the severity of the…

Verizon Communications is preparing a $100 billion cash and stock bid to take full control of Verizon Wireless from Vodafone Group, reports Reuters. Verizon’s board is expected to discuss the potential buyout next week ahead of its annual shareholder meeting.

Verizon Communications and UK-based Vodafone formed Verizon Wireless as a joint venture in 1999. Though Verizon has not yet made an official proposal to Vodafone, it has hired banking and legal advisers, according to Reuters’ sources. The company currently owns 55 percent of Verizon Wireless. Though it’s uncertain if Vodafone is interested in the deal, Verizon is prepared to take a bid public if negotiations don’t come to fruition.

…my luck is holding.

The dam does indeed NOT leak!!!

Joy and Happiness is mine!!!

At least until I have to face traffic again tomorrow morning!

What a bloody mission it was today – and I did not even leave that much later than I usually do. But travelling from 7 am to 8:30 am – never a fun thing to do on a Monday morning!

And then you get the looks from the managers. You’d swear they’ve never gotten stuck in traffic!!  Especially here in South Africa – our road users are not the most gracious bunch, and are just as likely to force you off the road than they are to let you in in front of them.

And then I had to try and fix a document typed in Tables in Word. Whoever designed that particular aspect of an already sucky program, needs to be drawn and…

Silence is a way to access The Real! Silence underlies every thing. Noise and movement are outside the veil; silence, is inside the veil.  Silence is present within every atom. The practice of silence takes you back to where God’s name is your name!

I’ve been watching some of the TED talks that have been done over the past few years. There is no doubt that it’s becoming ever more difficult to keep up with the changing world of science and especially anything to do with healthcare. Just a couple of days ago I learned that antioxidants may not be the panacea they have been touted to be. So now I have to rethink my supplement choices and make sure my vitamins are “low dose.”

One of the most important TED talks I’ve seen concerned diagnosing children with developmental disorders and how we’re doing it all wrong. An estimated one in six children suffers from a developmental disorder including:

Mental retardation
Learning disorders (Dyslexia, speech & language disorders)
Attention disorders (ADD, ADHD)
Autism spectrum (Autism, Asperger’s)
Genetic disorders (Down & William Syndromes)
Sensory processing disorder
Epilepsy, seizures, sleep disorder

Traditionally, these disorders have been…

Next year will see the first person receive induced pluripotent stem cells – “rewound” adult cells that can grow into any tissue in the body.

If all goes to plan, 2013 should see the first human trial of “rewound” cells. These are produced by turning adult cells back to a stem cell state and then coaxing them into becoming another type of cell. It will mark a milestone in our ability to generate new tissue – and maybe whole organs – from people’s own cells.

In 2006, Shinya Yamanaka reverted skin cells to an embryonic state. He called these cells induced pluripotent stem cells. iPSCs can grow into any tissue in the body by exposure to natural growth factors.

Many of us fear death. We believe in death because we have been told we will die. We associate ourselves with the body, and we know that bodies die. But a new scientific theory suggests that death is not the terminal event we think.

One well-known aspect of quantum physics is that certain observations cannot be predicted absolutely. Instead, there is a range of possible observations each with a different probability. One mainstream explanation, the “many-worlds” interpretation, states that each of these possible observations corresponds to a different universe (the ‘multiverse’). A new scientific theory – called biocentrism – refines these ideas. There are an infinite number of universes, and everything that could possibly happen occurs in some universe. Death does not exist in any real sense in these scenarios. All possible universes exist simultaneously, regardless of what happens in any of them. Although individual…
