Spain’s Absolute Musts

Most Beautiful Nature Spot
Spain is so beautiful that choosing only one “most beautiful” spot was a hard task. We are mountain lovers, so for us it would have to be Picos de Europa, a jaw-dropping mountain range located 20km from the northern coast across the communities of Cantabria, Asturias and Castile y León. Their highest point, Torre de Cerredo, reaches only 2,650 m so they are not too high and can be climbed by people who are out of shape as well.
Spectacular walks and stunning scenery guaranteed! The paths are well marked and the park is very well organised with a helpful tourist information booth whose staff speak fluent English, German and French!
Picos de Europa National Park has had a UNESCO Natural Biosphere Reserve status since 2003.
There are many access points to the park. During our stay we camped at the La Viorna campsite near Potes.

‘I Dream of Jeannie’ Costume Re-Worn By Barbara Eden, 78 (PHOTOS)

There are some on-screen costumes so iconic that you don’t even need to see the movie or TV show to know the outfit. (This writer has never seen “Star Wars” — shameful, we know — but would recognize Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia bikini anywhere.)
Barbara Eden’s “I Dream of Jeannie” costume falls squarely into that category. Eden, 78, inspired serious nostalgia when she got back into her famous crop top and harem pants from the 1960s sitcom this weekend, reprising her Jeannie character at Saturday’s Life Ball 2013 in Vienna.
Joined by Bill Clinton and Fergie onstage, Eden addressed the crowd and even performed her classic move: a fold of the arms, a nod of the head and a double blink.

The Caging of America – Why do we lock up so many people?
May 28, 2013

A prison is a trap for catching time. Good reporting appears often about the inner life of the American prison, but the catch is that American prison life is mostly undramatic—the reported stories fail to grab us, because, for the most part, nothing happens. One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich is all you need to know about Ivan Denisovich, because the idea that anyone could live for a minute in such circumstances seems impossible; one day in the life of an American prison means much less, because the force of it is that one day typically stretches out for decades. It isn’t the horror of the time at hand but the unimaginable sameness of the time ahead that makes prisons unendurable for their inmates. The inmates on death row in Texas are called men in “timeless time,” because they alone aren’t serving…

Rate Of Incarceration Declines, But U.S. Remains World’s Number One Jailer
May 28, 2013

.
One in every 34 U.S. adults was under some sort of correctional supervision in 2011 – whether it be in prison or jail, or on probation or parole, according to new figures from the Bureau of Justice Statistics. This is the lowest rate since 2000, and the third consecutive year in which the rate has declined. The number of people incarcerated also declined 1.3 percent, but the United States nonetheless remains the number one jailer in the world, with a rate of incarceration that far eclipses that in every other major developed nation.

America’s oldest veteran to spend quiet Memorial Day at Texas home

For his 107th Memorial Day, Richard Arvine Overton, who saw many of his fellow soldiers fall in the line of duty in World War II and even more die over the following decades, is planning a quiet day at the Texas home he built after returning home from World War II.
He wouldn’t want it any other way.
Overton, who is believed to be the nation’s oldest veteran, told FoxNews.com he’ll likely spend the day on the porch of his East Austin home with a cigar nestled in his right hand, perhaps with a cup of whiskey-stiffened coffee nearby.
“I don’t know, some people might do something for me, but I’ll be glad just to sit down and rest,” the Army veteran said during a phone interview. “I’m no young man no more.”

World War II veteran Richard Overton, left, is seen in his…

Pope Francis rocked some religious and atheist minds today when he declared that everyone was redeemed through Jesus, including atheists.
During his homily at Wednesday Mass in Rome, Francis emphasized the importance of “doing good” as a principle that unites all humanity, and a “culture of encounter” to support peace.
Using scripture from the Gospel of Mark, Francis explained how upset Jesus’ disciples were that someone outside their group was doing good, according to a report from Vatican Radio.

President Barack Obama was heckled during a speech at the National Defense University at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.
Benjamin began shouting just after Obama began remarks on the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The president repeatedly asked Benjamin if he could finish his remarks, at one point pausing to let her finish yelling.
“I’m willing to cut that young lady interrupting me some slack, because it’s worth being passionate about,” Obama said.
He even went off script to address the heckler.
