LAST month, for the 37th time, the House of Representatives voted to repeal Obamacare, with many Republicans saying that its call for greater government involvement in the health care system spells doom. Yet most other industrial countries have health care systems with far more government involvement than we are ever likely to see under Obamacare. What does their experience tell us about Republican fears?

While in Sweden this month as a visiting scholar, I’ve asked several Swedish health economists to share their thoughts about that question. They have spent their lives under a system in which most health care providers work directly for the government. Like economists in most other countries, they tend to be skeptical of large bureaucracies. So if extensive government involvement in health care is indeed a recipe for doom, they should have…

A Delaware aircraft preservation group denies a Wyoming man’s claim that it found pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart’s missing plane in 2010 but sat on the news so it could solicit him to pay for a later search.

Mystery has surrounded Earhart’s fate since her plane disappeared in 1937 in the South Pacific. Earhart was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932, but many experts believe she crashed into the Pacific a few years later while trying to establish a record as the first woman to fly around the world.

Timothy Mellon, son of the late philanthropist Paul Mellon, filed a federal lawsuit in Wyoming last week against The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery and Richard E. Gillespie, the group’s executive director. Mellon, who lives in Riverside, Wyo., claims the group solicited $1 million from him last year without telling…

The Old Hand of Oakdale

For years, my brother Ray has had a pool party at his farm. Friends, relatives, maybe even perfect strangers, come bring food, beverages, kids, lots of kids. Some arrives in RV’s and campers, because the party tends to continue through the second day. There’s swimming. There’s rides on the hay wagon pulled by horses or a tractor. And there are euchre games, lots of euchre games. It’s always a lot of fun. But after what happened last year, I may not be welcome.

My wife, Ray, and I were sitting in those popular white plastic chairs with arms, enjoying the shade of a big tree, talking, and people watching. As the sun moved, we scooted our chairs back to remain in the shade, not noticing we were moving on a slight downgrade. I leaned back and the chair tipped, carrying me with it.

During my…

OUR HEART IS EPI-CENTRE OF OUR HAPPINESS

In our daily lives, we experience diverse situations and those situations leave an indelible imprint / impression on our consciousness. An impression which hugely  impinges and brings about emotional upsurge affects our heart. Impression(s), so experienced, may be bad or good. But a person who knows how to convert bad debt (bad impressions) into credit (good impressions) is a happy / elated person – a bouquet of positivity.

Happiness is a state of mind and differs from person to person.  A person could be unhappy with all material prosperity in the world! A person who maintains equanimity despite adverse situation is a happy person. A person with sattavic attributes believing in wellness, selfless service, considers others’ needs above his own, maintains self restraints despite temptations is a happy person / a person with elated heart.

A person with less material possessions…

There was a social worker in Nigeria who not long ago was visiting a young man in one of the back streets of Lagos. On the bedside of this student he found the following books: the Bible; the Book of Common Prayer, I’m glad to see; the Koran; three copies of Watchtower, the magazine of the Jehovah’s Witnesses; a biography of Karl Marx; a book of yoga exercises; and a popular paperback that he particularly needed entitled How to Stop Worrying. That is typical of the modern mood, a mood of syncretism and of pluralism.

The correct name for this aspect of postmodernism is pluralism. Pluralism does not just affirm the obvious fact that there is a plurality of cultures and ideologies and religions in the world. It goes beyond that. It says that all these claims should be respected equally, and we must therefore affirm the independent validity of every religion and every…

If I were a middle class white guy writing on Forbes.com about being a poor black kid I’d be clueless. I’d be so clueless that I wouldn’t realize that I’m clueless, so I would not know that I should really, really step away from my expensive computer and not press send on my condescending, paternalistic and simplistic little essay that breezily fixes the problems of poor black kids. I wouldn’t think, well, if these steps are so easy — use the Internet to get more learning and try real hard — then why don’t more kids do that? I mean, wouldn’t some of them have thought of that already? No, they wouldn’t because none of them are middle class white guys.

I wouldn’t think about how my cheery advice doesn’t really interact with the challenges of being…

A Martian rock analyzed by NASA’s rover Opportunity contains clays formed in non-acidic water, an environment potentially suitable for the chemistry of ancient life to brew.

The solar-powered Opportunity landed on Mars in January 2004 for what was expected to be a 90-day mission to look for signs there was once water. It, and a twin rover, Spirit, which succumbed to the harsh Martian environment three years ago, had both found rocks altered by highly acidic water.

This self-portrait of NASA’s Mars Curiosity rover is shown in this NASA handout composite image released May 30, 2013. Curiosity is on the road toward Mount Sharp, the primary target of a planned two-year mission to search for habitats that could have supported life, NASA officials said June 5, 2013. – Reuters
