Things That Make You Go Hmmm…. Trenton Style

Jess's avatarWaiting on a Word

Trenton, New Jersey! The New Jersey state capital. I get to work there and it never ceases to amaze me.

First, the people. My biggest complaint about the People of Trenton is that they don’t know to “cross on green.” It would really help traffic patterns and us out-of-town road-ragers if they’d just follow this simple rule. I may send an email to the elementary schools and ask them to teach it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve almost run over someone walking or biking across the street against the green, or almost got rear-ended for slamming on my brakes to avoid such an accident.

I also don’t understand the litter. For a week I walked by a dirty diaper on the sidewalk. Who does that? People don’t pick up after their dogs, either. It’s gross. On Monday mornings I could probably make some nice money by picking…

Imagine a mini-raccoon with a teddy bear face that is so cute it’s hard to resist, let alone overlook. But somehow science did – until now.
Researchers announced Thursday a rare discovery of a new species of mammal called the olinguito. The reddish-brown animal is about 14-inches long with an equally long tail and weighs about 2 pounds.
It belongs to a grouping of large creatures that include dogs, cats and bears.
The critter leaps through the trees of mountainous forests of Ecuador and Colombia at night, according to a Smithsonian researcher who has spent the past decade tracking them.

A former photographer was convicted Tuesday of murdering four young California women decades ago after a two-month trial in which prosecutors called him a remorseless serial killer who preyed on young prostitutes.Jurors deliberated for about eight hours over two days in Marin County Superior Court before finding Joseph Naso, 79, guilty of slaying the four women with alliterative names: Roxene Roggasch in 1977, Carmen Colon in 1978, Pamela Parsons in 1993 and Tracy Tafoya in 1994.

The jury of six men and six women will reconvene Sept. 4 to determine if Naso gets the death penalty.

Even if Naso is sentenced to death, it is unlikely he will be executed. There are 725 inmates already on California’s Death Row and executions have been on hold since 2006, when a federal judge ordered an overhaul of California’s execution protocol. It will take at least…

Former President Bill Clinton is headed back to the White House – just for a day – and Oprah is coming, too.Clinton and Oprah Winfrey will be among 16 people that President Barack Obama will venerate later this year with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the White House announced Thursday. They’ll join other prominent people to be honored this year, including musicians, scientists, activists – even an astronaut.

Fifty years ago, President John F. Kennedy created the modern version of the medal – the highest honor the U.S. bestows on civilians – with the stroke of a pen to an executive order. In the five decades since, more than 500 people have been recognized for contributions to society of all stripes.

“This year’s honorees have been blessed with extraordinary talent, but what sets them apart is their gift for sharing that talent with…

“Crowd sourcing” to play a key role in fundamental physics experiment

Adrian McMenamin's avatarcartesian product ... stuff about computing mostly

Ordinary people are to be asked to make a contribution to an experiment which aims to determine key facts about the nature of the physical universe – reports the New Scientist.

Particle physicists at CERN – the join European experiment famous for the Large Hadron Collider – are conducting an experiment – AEgIS – into whether anti-matter interacts with the gravitational field in the same way as matter.

Most of our universe seems to be made of matter – a mystery in itself because there is no simple explanation why ‘matter’ should outnumber ‘anti-matter’ – and the two forms annihilate one another in a burst of energy when they meet – so it can be difficult to conduct experiments with anti-matter.

Anti-matter particles pair up with matter – so for the electron, the negatively charged particle in our everyday atoms, there is an anti-matter positron, which is a positively charged…

Sir Paul McCartney triumphantly returns to Winnipeg.

Bob's avatarExploring Winnipeg and Beyond.

When people sit around and talk about the average 70-year-old person certain things tend to come up in the conversation.  Retirement issues, health concerns, loss of hearing and perhaps even ambition.  For the exceptional pensioner they may talk about vibrancy and youthful appearance despite the age.  One thing is for certain though Paul McCartney does not fit into any group labeled ordinary.  I count my lucky stars that I have now seen this living legend twice and by all reasonable standards he just keeps getting better and better with age.

Let’s face it Paul is a rock and roll icon of the highest order and now into his 7th decade could very easily rest on his laurels and slip most contentedly into obscurity.  The fact that this ground-breaker and might I add billionaire chooses to go out on tour again speak volumes.  One of the most critical things I look…

Childrens Credit: The New Target of Identity Theft

sazzadodk's avatarThe New Target of Identity Theft

In recent days and months, there have been numerous cases of identity theft. These cases have been discovered during times of marriage applications and other enormous financial investments. What is not so obvious to the consumer public is that children have credit and are also victims of identity theft.

This situation became real in the life of Olivia McNamara, a freshman at Vanderbilt University who applied for a credit card in order to start her journey as a young adult. Unfortunately, she was declined—twice. Finally, her instincts kicked in and she decided to do some researching on her own to find out the problem with her credit. The result? Someone had stolen her identity and credit when she was 9 years old and racked up $1.5 million in debt. The credit thief also created 42 accounts with her identity.

Olivia is not alone. Eleven-year-old Brianna and eight-year-old Bradley have also…

The Eye of Crime: Operation Card Shop and Cybercriminal Activity

sazzadodk's avatarThe New Target of Identity Theft

When we think of arrests, we often have the show “Cops” in our heads. We see police arriving in blue uniforms to an apartment or home where they are to arrest someone for domestic dispute, abuse, drug use, various illegalities, and even gang activity. You think of a policeman telling someone to “put your hands behind your head and walk out slowly,” getting them to come out of the home so as to put handcuffs on their hands and get the supporting policeman to carry the suspect away in the “PD” (Police Department) vehicle, the top vehicle lights blinking blue and red, the policeman’s warning to other drivers to “get out of my way” as he or she travels to the local prison.

Today, however, the rise of the Internet has given way to a new type of criminal—that is, the cybercriminal. He or she is one who spends time…

Safety Precautions against burglars

RECEIVED THIS INFORMATION IN AN EMAIL FROM A FRIEND

I thought this was good safety info to share. Hey you never know!

There was a book called “Gonnif” (which is a Yiddish phrase meaning “thief”) that was published in the 70’s. The author is a reformed cat burglar. He pretty much wrote the same details as the below article. He also said that leaving a bathroom light on all night keeps the bad guys away…because they never know when you might be wide awake and using the bathroom…so they’ll pass your home and go to a dark home to break into.

.

Barking dogs? We’ll leave that home alone and go to the quite one next door.
